There's layers to the conflict.
Its an endeavor of uplifting our species into the sky, rather than being stuck in fear in the "safety" of the mother's den.
But every time shit is not going too well, the mother's den instinct becomes stronger and tries to pull us back from maturing as a species. As far as trying to erase progress with mass migration and so on. A lot of it embodied by old elites who are afraid of losing their power under new paradigms, of course. 
But in a mythological "egregoire" meta level, that is what it looks like.

To properly evolve and conquer the skies without committing the fundamental mistake of immanentizing the eschaton, we have to curb stomp the weak who are consumed by either nature or mind alone.
