The axe does seem efficient. I've never used one of those folding saws but they seem cool. For yard work I have a battery powered saw that works very nicely. 
My knoife is not a total saw, it still has a sharp edge and not teeth that take chunks out of material, so it's an OK compromise between knife and saw. Not much good against hard wood though, as it relies on slicing and not sawing.
