Don't strongly interpret the dreams.
The technical description of how it works is: Your shadow is using non-verbal language to try to influence you to satisfy its needs\fears. 
But not in a rational way, it doesn't understand how things work, it doesn't differentiate like a threat to you in a dumb videogames forum vs an actual criminal on the streets, etc...
Don't assume you are seeing the truth of yourself in any way, it is a true interaction with the unconscious/shadow, but its more like you are logged in the matrix with it and both of you can manifest all sorts of things, and do so to try to stablish some kind of communication.
