Being cursed/unlucky, and the manifest stuff have a kernel of truth, but its not intuitive how people think.
It's easier to understand if you think in visual terms, what you can "picture" happening, what you can't picture happening. 
It's not that simple either, but its a next step and more effective. If you can picture too easily bad things happening, but its hard for you to picture good things happening, it usually goes that way.
