that's big true. "just a matter of choice" makes it sound easier than it actually is sometimes, even if you aren't being irrational, because the person you should leave behind could be e.g. your parent or your kid or someone who used to be a very positive force until they weren't anymore. but it's true that that's a massive factor in determining where you end up in life, one of the main ones.
