Communism is a big part of it, but the faith crisis (As in, God is Dead and all that nietzchean stuff) is larger than that.

It's fundamentally the "midwit" problem applied in world population scale. 
Just like individuals can have a loss of faith phase once they learn a bit of science and how things work and mistakenly think everything is solved and nothing is real... humanity collectively/on average is going through a similar phase.

Since the fall of the church all politics and philosophy has been about how to get through it or succeed despite of it.
