I think they mean "trinkets" there, or cheap goods at least. The main trade good was rum however.
They transported slaves to the Americas, where they produced sugarcane. Slavers bought sugar from the slaves, and brought it to England (chiefly Liverpool), where sugar was sought after for they produced rum from it. Slavers loaded rum and sailed to Africa where they exchanged it with the local tribal "kings" to slaves.
Sure those chieftains needed other goods (weapons were the top luxury item), and slavers brought some stuff, but the main cycle that kept fueling the "slave triangle" was:
- slaves in africa
- sugar in america
- rum in England
