I've been trying to search back for what media may have formed my views, but it really makes no sense that way. The only thing about Russia I ever watched growing up was

which is romanticising the revolution and was banned in the Soviet union. It did make a pretty strong impression on me however, I've seen it again multiple times over the years. I had a teacher who propagated a lot for Russian literature, which lead to me looking it up and reading the Gulag Archipelago among others, again an anti-soviet book, although its writer later became a huge fan of Putin.

Compare that with the American media which has been flooding in, and they really had no reason to fuck it up.

I watched this whole series two times, along with many movies about the same era, none of which are negative to the USA. Yet the first interactions I have with them is when they send black hawk choppers over my house and start trying to infiltrate my dreams for no reason. If anything it would be the Russians doing that, considering all the American friendly messages in my memory.

CIA/MI6/14 eyes must be the most effective groups ever when it comes to antagonizing people who used to hold positive or neutral views of them. It's just amazing.
