Something happened, I may have some general idea now. Need to look into it more, but (as it often is) I realized the answer was kinda given in a comics magazine from the 1970s which was part of a collection given to me when I was little. Visual media wasn't as easy to get back then so I read the same comics over and over. Some of those stories probably had an effect on my view of the world, I still remember some of them well.
