You can listen to them talk about it here around 45:00-49:00 but the basic jist is that there is such a extremely small number of hours and limited time you can get for a child actor to shoot that its done out of necessity, they only get used for shots where they are definitely on screen, and if they aren't available they shoot around it and it looks fine when its edited together.
Yeah I dont have nearly the skill or confidence in that skill to pull off what's in my head to do it myself. Lookng for anything i guess, but yeah it might.
