are you sure it's not just the interval going ridiculously high? it doubles every time no new posts were found and the upper limit is something stupid like 600 seconds

certainly is slow... comes out to about 24 posts/sec. you'd expect some 1000s of inserts per second on any ordinary database. perhaps admin indefinitely stores dozens of snapshots of each post being typed so he can ban lewd-then-delete posters?
