> And how do you gain proficiency?

1. You will need a trainer. someone who has the needed proficiency, or a book.

2. You study 1 or 2 sessions: 8 hours or 16 hours a day.
For every "session" you get one roll and must hit a natural highest number on each dice to graduate to the next.
1d20 hit 20 or have up to 20 sessions
1d12 hit 12 or ...
1d10 ...
1d8 ...
1d6 ...
1d4 ...
once you hit 4 or after 4 sessions with the 1d4 you are proficient. Gwen did this for stealth with Bear as her trainer so they both had to spend 8 hours a day for her to roll one time. It's a very long and painful process but she did it in about 20 days or so with a lot of lucky rolls. Proficiency is one of those things that people study years to master so it's difficult to attain.

> Cat has proficiency in martial weapons. Does that mean she has proficiency in all those weapons then? Do you have proficiency in simple weapons then too?

I don't care what is said online, if you have martial weapon proficiency you are proficient in all but elven specialized weapons and some other specialized weapons. Martial weapons thus contain longbows, shortbows, and simple weapons.
