I am trying to work out a system for travel. The 5e system limits you to a unreasonably short day. We just watched a video of an out of shape person walk for 12 hours straight without any lead up. Someone used to walking should have no problem.

Walking quickly or running the whole way needs to have consequences or you just run everywhere all the time.

So here's the draft: walking is like not resting. Dungeon crawling is similar. Anything that is not resting is burning energy.

If a day of rest uses 1 ration to live, a day of not resting is more.

So I am toying with this:
1/2 ration if no work
1/2 ration for 1st 8 hours
1/2 ration for 4 more hours thereafter.
If you other than sleep all day (16 hours), that would be 2 rations.

If you work beyond 16 hours in a day that will cause fatigue, exhaustion, moral hit, something.

Running is the same.

5e won't let you travel more than 8 hours without rolling for exhaustion. DC10+1 per additional hour against constitution save. I think that's too harsh.

Fast pace would be -5 to passive wisdom. That seems too little.

A 12 hour day of walking would need 1.5 rations.

Running would need more. 4/3 more at least but also something else unless say you're proficient in running.

So here we are. I'll allow 5 hours of running vs 7 hours of walking if you have a -5 penalty to perception, a higher likelihood of being ambushed, and an extra 1/2 ration that day. Final offer. No exhaustion.
