Did you know Germany has a Garagenverordnung which regulates in detail what you are allowed to do and keep in your own garage? I didn't.

Things illegal to store in garages:
- lawnmowers or other gardening tools
- garden chairs or similar furniture
- sports equipment other than bikes
- household items for storage
- cardboard boxes
- cupboards if they do not contain car related items only
- food and beverages

Using your garage as
- workshop
- for making or rehearsing music or dancing
- parties
- as office or for garage sales

Basically anything not related to vehicles is verboten in the garage. In Bavaria the fines for violating the Garagenverordnung can go up to 500K or, in rare cases, the death penalty.

Obviously authorities won't inspect your garage daily. They don't need to. In a country of snitches, you can count on your neighbors to rat you out if they see or just suspect you doing anything that could potentially be against the law. Your hedge is a foot too high? Washing your car? Mowing the lawn outside of designated times? Heaating with wood that has more than the allowed moisture content? Your friendly neighbors will immediately send a detailed report to the nearest police station. I really love this country.
