She just accidentally sent them to everyone in her entire address book or something. Took a long time and her son to teach her how to stop that. It was something the Chinese introduced to tax them. People often changed their surname to that of the local nobles or rulers to show their affiliation. You didn't want to stand out as 'belonging' to another hostile noble family as a peasant. When your dynasty was overthrown you didn't want to be associated with their name under new rulers. Nguyen was always safe because everyone was Nguyen. It's somewhat similar to Park in Korean but opposite. In Korea the family name is extremely important and the Park clans were always powerful. You could trace back your heritage to an ancient king Park. So it's good to be Park.
