He's a tinkerer Ranger so he can craft poison if he can find or procure 1/3 the cost of the finished product in materials, so basically the materials themselves, in this case through foraging. He needs to roll the alchemy skill and other rolls, many rolls, but since it just takes time he can take as long as he wants and keep trying, aside from chance encounters with a much higher chance of encountering this Owlbear. But it's dead now so he can make whatever he wants now. The luck involved in it doing that much damage to the Owlbear was phenomenal. The Bear system luck is legendary
