Think like a parent would. It's not that her mother is lying, it's that she doesn't want to believe her daughter would have kept something like that from her and that she was suffering more than she knew. One of the main reactions of parents learning of their children's mental illness or trauma or whatever is denial. It sucks, but it's understandable.
