Also in the previous house my mom lived in I would always hear noises coming from the attic and I just decided to ignore them and tell myself it was just in my head, cause I figured if it wasn't it was either bats or a squatter and I really didn't want to deal with either of those.

Doesn't work in this game. You get soft-exp capped when your mon is around the same levels as the next gym leader's mons. So you cannot overlevel.
Seems the gym leaders also have counter moves to their own weaknesses. And they gotta be EV-trained too since they're significantly tougher than wild mons

I loved them when I was 12! 
Black and White haters are the reason GF went all in on nostalgiabait ever since. They actually tried to do something cool and make a region with nothing but new mons, but people had to flip out cause you can't catch Pikachu.
Sure, maybe it was easier but I just disagree on the trainers and mons. Elesa, Skyla and Iris were all great. The two elite four girls were cute too.
As for the mons, I won't deny that there are some pretty bad ones, but it also just has the most mons out of any gen. Still has plenty of great ones to choose from. If you limit yourself to only mons from that region as I usually do, it has a way better selection than XY. Or Diamond and Pearl even, cause so many of the new mons were locked behind the post game.

Compared to previous generations, it just felt so underperforming and "for children". Maybe I was just an angry 18 year old, who knows.
XY, despite also being easy, was much better if you ask me. But that's probably because it was far more story-driven, and the story was interesting. Or it was better because I went into it with very low expectations.

To be fair, the age difference when it came out probably played a role in how we feel about it.
I didn't really care for XY when it first came out. I replayed it a few years back and definitely appreciated it more but its still on the lower end of my list of mainline Pokemon games. It also suffers from just obviously being incomplete, and Z never coming out.
