Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas,
Today is the 7'th of December and the Second of Advent, and today we will be having Poul Loftet Sidder Nissen, from Flying Couch. The title is a play on a traditional Danish Christmas song called På Loftet Sidder Nissen.
Today's beer is a Porter. A bottom-fermented brewing style which is very dark. We've gone from light to less left to black, and two tops to a bottom.
The beer pours very dark to a black colour, leaving a foamy brown head.
Smelling the beer, we first block the left nostril and takes a long deep sniff with the right one. It gives off a dark roast smell of burnt malt and some coffee notes. Then we try with the left, and this time, it gives off a somewhat more light smell as it doesn't smell burnt, but of caramel instead.
Taking a sip, it comes off as well-balanced too, neither crispy nor burnt, nor too bitter. It does taste heavily of coffee with an aftertaste of caramel chocolate. Not much hops to speak of, nor burnt bread or an ash-like flavour which porters often have looking at you Guinness
Comparing to other porters, this one feels light, yet is still very well-balanced, giving a nice fizzy yet full-bodied flavour. A pleasant experience, at least for someone who really loves lightly-roasted coffee.
Merry Christmas /kanojo/
