Readout of First Site Visit of Critical Incident Review Team of the Law Enforcement Response to the Mass Shooting in Uvalde, Texas
As part of the work that began several weeks ago and is ongoing, the Department of Justice’s Critical Incident Review Team examining the mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, conducted its first site visit the week of June 27. Justice Department staff were joined by subject matter experts in conducting meetings and gathering pertinent information. This site visit, and all subsequent site visits, are just one piece of what will be a thorough and comprehensive review. We anticipate the cooperation of all the agencies involved in the response, as the department is committed to moving forward with a full, fair and complete accounting. The goal of the review is to provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses; identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events; and provide a roadmap for community safety before, during and after such incidents. The department will make its full findings and recommendations publicly available at the completion of the review.

Seven Epstein Victims Write Letters to US Judge Ahead of Ghislaine Maxwell's Sentencing

Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite who helped Epstein traffic underage girls for him and his wealthy clients, was found guilty in December 2021 on several counts of sex trafficking a minor and related conspiracy episodes. Next week, the Manhattan court will decide her punishment, which could see her face 55 years in prison.

Seven of the victims of the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein have drafted letters to US District Judge Alison J. Nathan, who is presiding over the case of Epstein's accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. Judge Nathan will determine her sentence on June 28.
One of the victims, Annie Farmer, argues that Maxwell, who is facing up to 55 years in prison, was "sucking in [victims'] precious time, energy and wellbeing" with her lies and lack of remorse over what she did to them.

Annie's sister, Maria Farmer, who was also lured and groomed by Maxwell and Epstein, called the British socialite "dangerous and devious" in her letter. Farmer said that the duo's actions cost her a career as an artist and left her scarred, feeling unsafe, and afraid of Maxwell hurting her again if she got the chance.

Another of Epstein's victims, who has been seeking justice for over a decade, Virginia Giuffre, gave a scathing characteristic of Ghislaine Maxwell in her letter to the judge. She argues that Maxwell "opened the door to hell" for many girls and failed to prevent harm befalling them when she had such a chance:

"Ghislaine, like a wolf in sheep's clothing, you used your femininity to betray us, and you led us all through it. You could have put an end to the rapes, the molestations, the sickening manipulations that you arranged, witnessed and even took part in. Ghislaine, you deserve to spend the rest of your life in a jail cell. You deserve to be trapped in a cage forever, just like you trapped your victims."

Sarah Ransome, another young girl molested by Epstein and Maxwell, recalled the numerous attempts she made to end her life. She blames her suicide attempts over the trauma she sustained over half a year spent on the financier's "sex island" being used as a "sex toy." In one graphic episode, Ransome recalled how she tried to jump from a cliff on Epstein's island into shark-infested waters. She called it the only escape she had from the torture she endured.

Lastly, a woman only identified as "Kate" told the judge of the "silent screams" that Epstein and Maxwell's victims had inside their minds after being sexually abused by the duo and their wealthy and powerful friends.

While Epstein never saw a proper trial after he committed suicide in August 2019 in his jail cell, Maxwell was arrested and found guilty in a December 2021 trial on several counts of sex trafficking a minor and related conspiracy episodes. She will be sentenced on June 28.
The prosecution asked the judge to send her to prison for a term between 30 and 55 years. The defense insisted on a more lenient sentence of no more than five years, arguing that Maxwell is being used as a scapegoat over the unsuccessful trial of Epstein.

A group of fighters from the Georgian Legion have been eliminated in the LPR, the Russian Defense Ministry has revealed 

Russian forces have eliminated a group of Georgian mercenaries, fighting on the Ukrainian side, who were allegedly involved in the abuse and murder of prisoners, the spokesman for the Defense Ministry in Moscow, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, said on Monday.

Democrat Louisiana Judge Blocks State Trigger Law Banning Abortion

A Democrat judge has temporarily blocked Louisiana’s trigger law banning abortion from going into effect.

Judge Robin Giarrusso of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court issued an order temporarily halting the law after abortion providers in the state filed a lawsuit.

The law was written so that if Roe v. Wade was overturned, virtually all abortions in the state would be immediately banned, unless the mother is at risk of death or permanent injury.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry tweeted on Friday that “Louisiana’s trigger law banning #abortion is now in effect.”

Abortion providers represented by Center for Reproductive Rights argued that “the abortion restrictions violate providers’ due process rights and ‘lack constitutionally required safeguards to prevent arbitrary enforcement,'” according to a report from Fox News.

They also claimed the laws were vague and did not set a specific start time for the law to be applied.

The judge will hold a hearing on the case July 8 and determine if the law will remain blocked.

“A public health emergency is about to engulf the nation. As expected, Louisiana and many other states wasted no time enacting bans and eliminating abortion entirely,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement obtained by Axios.

“People who need an abortion right now are in a state of panic. We will be fighting to restore access in Louisiana and other states for as long as we can. Every day that a clinic is open and providing abortion services can make a difference in a person’s life,” Northup continued.

AG Landry has vowed to keep fighting.

For now, abortions will remain legal in the state.

FBI Liars Could Still Be Held Accountable
The FBI’s representation during the March 6, 2017 meeting that the supposed intel related to Manafort and Page came from “CROWN sources,”—again, assuming the agent meant Steele—suggests the Crossfire Hurricane team deceived the DOJ from the beginning, resulting in the OI attorney representing to the FISA court that Steele’s network of sources were sources used by British intelligence. That deception also likely affected Boente’s decision to sign the second renewal application.

While these events occurred more than five years ago, and a five-year statute of limitations governs false statement offenses, the D.C. Circuit has held that if a defendant engages in a scheme “to falisf[y], conceal[], or cover[]up” material facts, the limitations period does not begin to run until the scheme ends.

In this case, then, any FBI agents involved in concealing from the DOJ during the final preparation and review of the June 29, 2017, FISA application that Steele’s sources were not “CROWN sources” or connected to his work in British intelligence could still face criminal liability.

Further, while the Sussmann trial proved memories fail—sometimes conveniently—uncovering the individuals responsible for representing Steele’s source network as connected to his past life as an MI6 agent seems a relatively straightforward venture given what we learned from the special counsel’s conviction of Kevin Clinesmith.

Clinesmith pleaded guilty nearly two years ago to altering an email related to Page to make it appear that Page “was not a source” for the CIA. Clinesmith’s undoing came from the fact that in preparing the FISA application and renewals, the various government actors used email to confirm details, including with Clinesmith.

The OIG report on FISA abuse detailed that process, noting there were many “back-and-forth exchange[s]” “between the OI Attorney and the FBI, during which the OI Attorney asked many questions about Page, as well as about Steele’s reporting and the structure and access of his source network.” “To further address reliability, the OI Attorney sought information from the FBI to describe the source network in the FISA application,” according to the OIG report. And that information-gathering process included email exchanges and written summaries of briefings.

Either that briefing left the OI attorney with the impression that Steele’s source network came from his MI6 work, or after the FISA court legal advisor asked, “how it was that Steele had a network of sub-sources,” the OI attorney pushed the FBI for more information. If the latter, emails likely memorialize the exchanges.

Whether the FBI agents affirmatively misrepresented Steele’s source network as connected to his British intelligence work in their communiques with the OI attorney, and in turn the OI attorney relayed that information to the FISA court, is unknown to us, but hopefully not to Special Counsel Durham.

Even if no one lied to the OI attorney and he merely assumed Steele’s source network carried over from his time with MI6, a misrepresentation to Boente during the March 6, 2017, briefing that Steele was a “CROWN source” still matters because the FISA surveillance orders were renewed two more times after that meeting.

That, of course, is assuming the FBI meant Steele when they referenced a “CROWN source”—something not entirely clear. More on that shortly.

This time, may I suggest that the supervisors focus less on a candidate’s ability to win an election this fall and more on his or her ability to lead the state’s largest prosecutorial agency? Someone already in the office, perhaps a career prosecutor who already knows the ropes and can get a quick start.

As for all the politicians tempted to line up to try to snag this interim political plum to get a leg up in November: Please don’t.

PHOENIX — Former Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel died due to health complications on Saturday, according to a statement by made by her family.
Adel was 45 years old.

Adel assumed office as Maricopa County Attorney in 2019 and resigned in March.

She is survived by her husband, David DeNitto, and two children.

“This May we would have celebrated 20 years of marriage. My family and I are utterly heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” DeNitto said in a statement.
“I am heartbroken to learn of Allister’s passing. Her many years of service to our community leaves a legacy that impacted crime victims, first responders, and animals, just to name a few. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and this community that she so dearly loved,” Interim County Attorney Rachell Mitchell, who replaced Adel, said in a statement.

Adel was first chosen to replace Bill Montgomery as county attorney in 2019 after Montgomery was named to the Arizona Supreme Court.

She was reelected to the position in 2020, becoming the first woman elected to the role, after defeating Democrat Julie Gunnigle.

Adel spent the election night in the hospital having emergency surgery for a brain bleed, the result of an earlier fall at home.

In August, Adel sought in-patient services for anxiety and alcohol abuse and was later transferred to a facility in California for further treatment.

The Maricopa County Democratic Party called on Adel, a Republican, to resign immediately to focus on her recovery in September.

She issued her resignation in March after it was revealed Adel and MCAO were forced to drop 180 criminal cases after charges weren’t filed before the statute of limitation expired.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey issued his condolences on Twitter, calling the death a “tragic” incident.

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Gates also issued a statement on Twitter.

 Washington unveils new sanctions on Russia

The US and other G7 nations will target defense industry supply chains, the White House says 

The US and other G7 nations are about to impose restrictions on “hundreds of individuals and entities” as part of its new round of sanctions on Russia, the White House announced on Monday. The measures will target Russia’s military-industrial complex to deprive it of key technologies, it said.

The leading Western economies – the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan – will “aggressively target” Russia’s major state-owned defense enterprises, defense research institutions, and other “defense-related” entities with “blocking sanctions,” the White House statement said. The goal of the restrictions is to sap the Russian defense industry of “critical components” and limit its ability to replace equipment it loses in the conflict with Kiev, it added.

Western nations will continue to “restrict Russia’s access to key industrial inputs, services, and technologies produced by our economies,” the White House said, adding that the effects of the measures will become more visible “over time.”

Washington has not named any specific entities or individuals that will face restrictions as part of the new sanctions. It only said it plans to put a total of 500 Russian officials on its blacklist for “exercising illegitimate authority” and committing “human rights abuses.”

The G7 nations will also impose restrictions on foreign companies engaged in “backfill activities” and helping Russia evade sanctions.

Additional measures announced by Washington include higher tariffs on “on more than 570 groups of Russian products worth approximately $2.3 billion to Russia.” The measures were “carefully calibrated” to hurt the Russian economy and spare America’s, the statement said. Additional revenues obtained through the new tariffs might be used to support Ukraine, the White House said.

On Sunday, the US, UK, Canada, and Japan announced an embargo on Russian gold. At the G7 level, the initiative faced resistance from Germany, which said decisions such as this should be made by the EU first.

The US and its allies in Europe and elsewhere have already introduced sweeping sanctions on Russia over its military operation in Ukraine, including restrictions targeting the banking and finance sectors, and personal restrictions on officials and businessmen considered to be close to the Kremlin. Russian banks have also been disconnected from the SWIFT system.
