December 3 - South Korean president declares martial law

>> South Korean President Yoon Seok Yel declared martial law on Tuesday, accusing the opposition of plotting to "rebellion" and "attempting to overthrow a free democracy."

>> It was the first time a South Korean president has declared martial law since the country's military dictatorship ended in the late 1980s. Mr. Yun, elected president in 2022, is in an almost constant political standoff with the opposition, which controls parliament.

>> In a speech broadcast on national television on Tuesday night, Mr. Yun denounced the opposition for repeatedly using its majority in the National Assembly to impeach members of his cabinet and block the adoption of his government's budget plans.

>> It has "paralyzed the administration," Mr. Yun said. The National Assembly, which was supposed to be the foundation of free democracy, has become the monster that destroys it.
