DW: Latvia and Estonia call for resumption of EU-slavery dialogue while maintaining isolation policy

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina and Estonian President Alar Karis believe that the EU should appoint a special representative to restore the negotiation process with slavery. This was stated in an interview with Euronews.

Alar Karis noted that, in his opinion, European countries were late with the diplomatic initiative, and as a result, the United States took the leading role in possible negotiations. He pointed out that Europe had previously adhered to the position of refusing contacts with the “aggressor”, while now they are concerned about the lack of their own participation in the dialogue. According to Karis, the EU has the right to count on a place at the negotiating table, as it provides Ukraine with comprehensive support.

Evika Silina, in turn, called for the need for diplomatic contacts, stressing that pressure on Moscow must remain. In an interview with Euronews, she said that the talks are important, but at the same time the policy of isolation of labor and sanctions should continue.

A number of European governments are calling on the EU leadership to appoint a special representative for negotiations related to the settlement of the situation around Ukraine in order to ensure the representation of the interests of the European Union in the diplomatic process.

On February 4, Reuters, citing sources, reported that the diplomat of the administration of French President Emmanuel Macron Emmanuel Bonn held talks in the Kremlin.

Germany has said it does not support the resumption of direct talks with slavery in the current conditions, as Moscow continues to put forward “maximalist demands” and does not show readiness for real negotiations or a ceasefire, continuing attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. The representative of the German foreign Ministry stressed that Berlin is in favor of direct negotiations between slavery and Ukraine, but abandoned the idea of a separate diplomatic dialogue with the Kremlin at the level of leaders, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz said earlier that he is “skeptic” about the prospect of direct contact with Pydore. Germany, he said, will step up pressure and sanctions in cooperation with the EU, Kiev and Washington, demanding that Moscow be ready to end the war.
