Five facts about the Boeing E4B "Doomsday Plane"
Dan Lake Reddit
Aucklanders could be mistakenly thinking the US president is in town this week after the arrival of a very presidential looking aircraft on Monday.
While Donald Trump wasn't onboard the so-called Doomsday Plane, it was in fact carrying US Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper, who is in the country for a brief visit.
The aircraft itself has some pretty amazing facts and history behind it.
The aircraft is a Boeing E4B, a military modified version of the Boeing 747-200. By airline standards, the aircraft is old - it's first flight was in 1973.
To put that into perspective, Air New Zealand's 747 -200s, which they first flew in 1981, were retired from the airlines fleet in 2000 at the age of 19 years. The E4B is still flying at the ripe old age of 45 years.
The Boeing E4 was built to be a mobile command post for the president of the United States, even in the event of nuclear war. It's designed to withstand the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear explosion and remaine completely intact. Because of this, its become known as the 'Doomsday Plane'.
On top of being essentially a flying bunker for the US president, the aircraft is also part of the massive, behind-the-scenes contingency planning that goes into any presidential visit.

The Declining Empire Of Chaos Is Going Nuts Over Iran
Authored by Federico Pieraccini via The Strategic Culture Foundation,
The transition in recent years from a unipolar to a multipolar world order has created international tensions that seem to threaten to escalate into clashes between regional and global powers.
In 2014 we were almost at the point of no return in Ukraine following the coup d’etat supported and funded by NATO and involving extremist right-wing Ukrainian nationalists. The conflict in the Donbass risked escalating into a conflict between NATO and the Russian Federation, every day in the summer and autumn of 2014 threatening to be doomsday. Rather than respond to the understandable impulse to send Russian troops into Ukraine to defend the population of Donbass, Putin had the presense of mind to pursue the less direct and more sensible strategy of supporting the material capacity of the residents of Donbass to resist the depredations of the Ukrainian army and their neo-Nazi Banderite thugs. Meanwhile, Europe’s inept leaders initially egged on Ukraine’s destabilization, only to get cold feet after reflecting on the possibility of having a conflict between Moscow and Washington fought on European soil.

22% Of Millennials Say They Have No Friends
2% Of Millennials Say They Have No Friends

A staggering 22% of millennials (aged 23 - 38) surveyed by YouGov say they have no friends, while less than 1/3 say they have at least 10 friends.
Meanwhile 30% of Millennials say they 'always or often feel lonely.'
According to the New York Daily News,

Even if younger Americans are overstating their isolation, the jarring numbers reflect long-term rising trends in loneliness. Studies have indicated that loneliness has myriad negative mental and physical health effects.

“Strong social relationships support mental health, and that ties into better immune function, reduced stress and less cardiovascular activation,” Debra Umberson, a professor of sociology at the University of Texas, told Time magazine in 2015.

Oddly, 25% of Millennials surveyed also said they don't have any acquaintances.

Is social media to blame? As the Daily News points out, "a 2018 study out of the University of Pennsylvania linked usage of apps like Facebook and Instagram to social isolation. “Using less social media than you normally would leads to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness,” the study’s author, psychologist Melissa Hunt, said at the time."

Meanwhile, according to Vox, many 30-somethings have a hard time making new friends as they get older, as their lives become busier and friends move away.

More recently, in a 2016 paper, researchers in Germany found a peak of loneliness in a sample of 16,000 Germans at around age 30, another around age 50, and then increasing again at age 80.

“We don’t quite know why this is happening,” said Maike Luhmann, a psychologist who researches loneliness at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and co-authored the paper. -Vox

Dow plunges 760 points in worst day of 2019 as trade war intensifies

Stocks fell sharply Monday as a trade war between the world’s largest economies intensified with China retaliating against President Donald Trump’s latest move.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 767.27 points, or 2.9%, to close at 25,717.74 and dropped as much as 961.63 points at one point. The S&P 500 dropped nearly 3% to 2,844.74. The Nasdaq Composite lagged, falling 3.5% to 7,726.04. It was the worst percentage drop for all three indexes this year. The S&P 500 is now more than 6% below its record hit only last month.

The Nasdaq fell for a sixth straight session, its longest losing streak since late 2016. The S&P 500 also posted a six-day losing streak. The Dow declined for a fifth straight day. The move continues a sell-off that began last week when President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on the rest of Chinese goods and the Federal Reserve failed to signal it would be as aggressive as the market hoped in backstopping the economic slowdown.

Apple led the decline in stocks that have the most to lose from the new round of tariffs, losing 5.2%. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) closed 2.2% lower as the new tariffs will hit items apparel, electronics and toys. Nike dropped 2.7%. Macy’s and Best Buy pulled back 3.1% and 3.5%, respectively.

China halts purchase of U.S. farm products
hina halts purchase of U.S. farm products

(Adds details from the Commerce Ministry statement)

By Koh Gui Qing

Aug 6 (Reuters) - China has halted its purchases of U.S. agricultural products and will not rule out levying import tariffs on American farm imports purchased after Aug. 3, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said early on Tuesday.

The moves by China represent the latest escalation in its trade row with the United States that has unnerved global markets and investors.

"Related Chinese companies have suspended purchases of U.S. agricultural products," China's Ministry of Commerce said in an online statement posted shortly after midnight in Beijing on Tuesday.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry did not disclose the value of U.S. agricultural imports that may be subjected to new import tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump ratcheted up tensions between the two countries last week when he vowed to impose a 10% tariff on $300 billion of Chinese imports from Sept 1, a decision China's Commerce Ministry said was a "serious violation" of the consensus struck by Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Osaka in June.

"China's market capacity is large and it has bright prospects for importing high-quality U.S. agricultural products," the Commerce Ministry said.

It added that it hoped the United States would keep its promises and create the "necessary conditions" for bilateral cooperation.

The amount of U.S. farm products that China buys has been a sore point in its trade spat with the United States. Other issues of contention include the protection of intellectual property rights in China and Chinese exports of fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances, which U.S. officials say is the main source of a drug blamed for opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States. North Korea fires more weapons, denounces US military drills
North Korea fires more weapons, denounces US military drills
By KIM TONG-HYUNG

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea continued to ramp up its weapons demonstrations by firing two presumed short-range ballistic missiles into the sea Tuesday while lashing out at the United States and South Korea for continuing military exercises that the North says could derail fragile nuclear diplomacy.

North Korea’s fourth round of weapons launches in less than two weeks came amid a standstill in nuclear negotiations and after President Donald Trump repeatedly dismissed the significance of the country’s recent tests despite the threat the weapons pose to allies South Korea and Japan and to U.S. bases there.

Experts say Trump’s downplaying of the North’s weapons display has allowed the country more room to advance its military capabilities as it attempts to build leverage ahead of negotiations, which could possibly resume sometime after the end of the allies’ drills later this month.

South Korea’s military alerted reporters to the launches minutes before the North’s Foreign Ministry denounced Washington and Seoul over the start of their joint exercises on Monday. The ministry’s statement said the drills, which North Korea sees as an invasion rehearsal, leave the country “compelled to develop, test and deploy the powerful physical means essential for national defense.”
