Lula da Silva slams 'US meddling' in Brazilian sovereign affairs on behalf of Boeing

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the US Department of Justice's scrutiny of Saab corporation. Earlier, the DoJ issued a request for the Swedish defense company to disclose details of Brazil’s 2014 purchase of Gripen fighter jets. "I think this is the US meddling in another country's affairs," Lula said.

The $5.4 billion deal between the Brazilian government and Saab, which managed to beat American Boeing and French Dassault, was inked under former President Dilma Rouseff. Lula recalls that he intended to buy Dassault's Rafale fighters, but eventually decided to pass this decision to his successor, who opted to purchase Swedish aircraft. The Brazilian president alleges the US government is furious about the sovereign choice of the Latin American nation. 

"They didn't like it when I said I was going to buy the Rafale, and certainly didn't like it when Dilma bought the Swedish aircraft, as they wanted us to buy the U.S. plane," Lula said.

Lula da Silva who served as the 35th Brazilian president between 2003 and 2011, was reelected in 2023 as the 39th president.

The “Mackey model” above refers to the case of Douglass Mackey, an American citizen who was arrested, tried, and convicted of a felony for distributing memes mocking Hillary Clinton in 2016. If the regime is less able to use disinformation as a censorship pretext to pressure Twitter to deplatform users, Mackey’s case represents a thus-far successful attempt (the case is currently on appeal) to codify much of the disinformation scam into criminal law. Furthermore, Durov’s arrest might be best understood as a complement to the Mackey model. If Mackey’s arrest represents the regime’s willingness to attack and arrest citizens for unapproved speech, Durov’s arrest represents Western governments’ increasing willingness to arrest censorship-resistant tech CEOs for not playing ball like the regime lackeys that used to control Big Tech exclusively.
The dangerous precedent of the Durov arrest has elicited strong condemnation from Edward Snowden to Elon Musk.
Indeed, it’s hard not to view Durov’s arrest as a trial balloon for an imminent legal offensive on Musk, who has enraged EU authorities by refusing to cater to the censorship demands of the EU and US security establishment.
    Elon Musk’s social media platform X is in breach of the European Union’s online content law, according to preliminary findings by regulators that could lead to hefty fines for the company.
    The European Commission, the executive arm of the 27-member bloc, announced on Friday that the social media platform is violating the Digital Services Act (DSA) in areas linked to “dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers.”
The disgraced Alexander Vindman, notorious Russia-hoax impeachment operative, has made this explicit.
Apart from its relevance to free speech per se, the Durov case is also relevant to geopolitics. Indeed, Telegram is especially known for hosting a rich repository of unmediated footage from hot-button conflict zones such as Ukraine and Gaza. Telegram’s willingness to host such unmediated, unfiltered information about geopolitical hotspots could very well have put them in the crosshairs of a variety of nation states, including Israel (the leak of whose government files was published on a telegram channel), the Ukraine, and stakeholders in the Ukraine war such as the USA or France (footage confirming direct US and Western involvement in Ukraine has circulated on telegram for some time now). Indeed, just two months ago, the Atlantic Council’s “disinformation censorship” arm, DFR Lab, put out a video singling out Telegram for criticism. Two months later, Durov was arrested in France. Funny how that works!
The Atlantic Council, by the way, is funded by both the US Government and various Ukrainian oligarchs.
The larger geopolitical context of Durov’s arrest is perhaps the most interesting. Despite US regime propaganda trying to pin Durov as a Russian agent, Durov in fact lived as a Russian exile and was starkly at odds with the Russian government, precisely because he wouldn’t compromise Telegram’s privacy on behalf of Russia’s demands.
Durov’s life in UAE, which has staked out something of a neutral role in the US-Russia conflict as a geopolitical Switzerland, can be seen as an experimental attempt to live a life as a functionally stateless, neutral tech oligarch who shows neither fear nor favor to any of the multiple intelligence agencies approaching him. Durov’s recent arrest shows the limitations of this approach and seems to underscore that once one reaches a certain level in things, neutrality is impossible, and there is no escaping the great geopolitical/censorship chess game taking place for the highest stakes imaginable.
We hope we are wrong on this last point and will continue to follow this case with tremendous interest.

First men jailed for riot-related social media posts

The first jail terms for using social media to encourage disorder in the recent unrest have been handed down.
Jordan Parlour is believed to be the first person to be sent to prison over social media posts made in relation to the nationwide riots.
Unrest erupted after online posts falsely identified the suspected killer of three young girls in a knife attack in Southport.
Parlour was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to publishing written material intended to stir racial hatred.
UK riots latest: More than 700 disorder-related arrests so far. His mother submitted a note to court saying: "We can only speculate that he has been caught up and swept away by emotions circulating around the country." The 28-year-old wrote that "every man and his dog should smash [the] f*** out of Britannia hotel (in Leeds)" in a Facebook post in early August. Taking aim at asylum seekers in another post, he wrote: "They are over here given a life of Riley off the tax of us hard-working people earn when it could be put to better use... come here with no work visa, no trade to their name and sit and doss." The judge heard how the Britannia Hotel in Seacroft, Leeds, where 210 asylum seekers and refugees were living, was targeted by people throwing missiles and breaking windows, forcing it into "lockdown".
Further damage was done to the hotel after the post, the court heard, and more than a dozen police had to be diverted to the area over the weekend. Parlour had suffered a broken heel and was at home when he wrote the posts, which were reported to the police. Passing sentence, Judge Guy Kearl KC said: "You took to social media in order to encourage others towards participation in the attacks upon the hotel. "The initial post received six likes. However, it was sent to your 1,500 Facebook friends and, because of your lack of privacy settings, will have been forwarded to friends of your friends. "The messages were therefore spread widely, which was plainly your intention."

Parlour was not the only person sent to prison for social media posts.
Tyler Kay was jailed for 38 months after using social media to encourage people to torch hotels housing asylum seekers. The 26-year-old, from Northampton, called for mass deportations and his posts on X revealed a "fundamentally racist mindset", Judge Adrienne Lucking KC told Northampton Crown Court. The court heard Kay's posts called for mass deportation and advised protesters to "mask up". He also retweeted a screenshot of a message inciting action against a named immigration solicitors in the town. Judge Lucking said Kay posted as he did because he thought there would be "no consequences".
"The overall tone of the posts clearly reveals your fundamentally racist mindset," she said. She added: "I am sure that when you intentionally created the posts you intended that racial hatred would be stirred up by your utterly repulsive, racist and shocking posts that have no place in a civilised society." The dad-of-three was convicted of stirring up racial hatred.

'Not a law free zone'
More than 741 people have now been arrested in connection with the unrest, of which 302 have been charged, the National Police Chiefs' Council said on Friday.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds told Sky News on Friday the government would revisit the framework of legislation that regulates the responsibilities of social media companies regarding content inciting violence or hate. "We stand ready to make changes if necessary," he said of the Online Safety Act, passed in October, but not due to come into effect until next year.

However, high-profile figures in the US, including billionaire X owner Elon Musk and right-wing podcaster Joe Rogan, have criticised British police for going after rioters on social media. Rogan said the "crackdown" reminds him of "Soviet Russia" while Musk shared a Sky News post of the director of public prosecutions warning that sharing online material of riots could be an offence. Musk's repost said: "This is actually happening."
