Maui couple spent hours in ocean to escape wildfire
Elizabeth Vargas Reports

As fire erupted in Maui, Mike Cicchino and his wife jumped into the crashing waves and spent more than three hours in the ocean.

Elizabeth Vargas: How did you get to the ocean, I know the fire came so fast you barely had time to think?

Mike Cicchino: We pretty much just tried driving the opposite way of the fire, but immediately traffic was everywhere, nobody knew where to go.

Elizabeth Vargas: Nobody was directing you, nobody was telling you anything, right?

Mike Cicchino: No, when it happened I knew if I called 911 the phone might drop out, or even if I could get hold of 911. So, my first thought was to call my Mom because she is in Wailuku and she could contact 911 and see where we are supposed to go. I immediately got a call back from my Mom a minute later that she talked to 911 and all they could tell her was to follow the traffic, follow everybody else. That made us get into a giant traffic jam where nobody could get out and basically fire was everywhere. You had people running to the left and the right and into the ocean. Nobody knew where to go there was not enough warning.

Elizabeth Vargas: We are looking at this video now of the fire, we just saw a moment ago a shot of you standing in the water with all these other people standing in the water I guess up to your waist, even up to your rib cage it was the only safe place you could find?

Mike Cicchino: At times, even where you are seeing those videos where people are standing, became on fire, it was like a continuous bomb going off. Times where you couldn't be in the water without being burned.

Elizabeth Vargas: How long where you in the water?

Mike Cicchino: On and off for three hours. So, every time the water started getting fire we would swim into a spot that had less smoke and a little bit of oxygen. It was going back and forth and this is over a 12 hour period.

Elizabeth Vargas: How far out did you have to go to get safely from all this smoke?

Mike Cicchino: It was so dark, so there were times it was so dark I didn't know how far we were out. We were trying to touch the bottom to basically keep our heads above water, my wife is not the best swimmer. We got stuck in a rip current that was pulling us out and there were times we couldn't touch the ground and we didn't even know where the ground is. When smoke would clear for a second we would see some red, okay, that is where the land is. Even in the smoke you had embers and fires hitting you and every time the fire would hit my back or my face I would dunk under water and then come back up to get a breath, the fire would hit me and I would go back under and this went on the whole night.

Elizabeth Vargas: Mike I can't even imagine what was going through your mind did you start to wonder if your guys were going to make it?

Mike Cicchino: There was a lot of times we didn't think we would make it at all. I just remember calling my Mom, my brother, my daughter, tell them that I love them, tell my Mom I don't think I am going to make it out of here, take care of my daughter. When we were hiding in the ocean I thought we were going to drown because we were taking in so much smoke, you feel yourself getting tired . It was weird your scared but then your getting tired then your slowly losing consciousness with every breath and I realised at points if we stayed in the water, not only are we getting hit with fire but we are going to die of smoke inhalation just by breathing it in and we are going to drown. And I know that some of the people that were with me drowned. I saw babies that were out there that I never saw again.

Elizabeth Vargas: You saw babies out in the ocean with you?

Mike Cicchino: People were holding babies and when I went back to...when I was helping the Coast Guard try to gather people and get head counts to try to get people out of the fire as much as I could. When I was doing the head count of the kids the babies were not there anymore.

Elizabeth Vargas: That is so distressing. How did the Coast Guard finally find you?

Mike Cicchino: That was...Thank God my Mom called... Last thing I said to my Mom when we got to Front Street, "I'm jumping in the water and I don't know if I am going to make it. We are in front of Waikiki Brewery. She had the smarts to call the Coast Guard and they had no idea there was a fire when she called. Whenever my phone would sometimes get a signal or text in one of the text my Mom said the Coast Guard is looking for you. I kept my eyes out on the water, I don't see any moving boats and then I finally saw one way later in the night, closer to midnight, one o'clock now. Keep in mind this started at 3:30 in the afternoon. I saw those red and blue lights out on the water and I knew it was the Coast Guard. I flashed my phone flashlight at the Coast Guard, trying to yell for everyone else to do the same. At the same time I am doing this I got a phone call that said U.S. Coast Guard. My Mom gave my number to them and they basically called me and that was a point of contact for the Coast Guard to direct them where to go into shore to save us because we couldn't take anymore smoke... I ask everyone to read those cases. None of them hold what DA Willis says they do.
False representation to the Court makes DA Willis guilty of the same conduct she accuses the defendants.
It's a violation of Ga. Code Ann. § 16-10-20.1 (false statement to Court)

@KlasfeldReports

DA Willis wants to advise all of the defendants in the Trump racketeering case that decisions by Ken Chesebro and Sidney Powell to invoke speedy trial rights come with certain consequences.

The filing starts with four.

Trudeau Liberals request another six months to complete 'Freedom Convoy' report

https://www.rebelnews.com/trudeau_liberals_request_another_six_months_to_complete_freedom_convoy_report

POEC Commissioner Paul Rouleau issued 56 recommendations for the federal government to consider during its deliberations on better handling emergencies, including amendments to the Emergencies Act.

After six months of deliberating on amendments to the Emergencies Act, the federal government needs another six months before releasing a final report.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc penned a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau requesting more time to address the calls for change by the Public Order Emergency Commission (POEC).

"The federal government is considering these recommendations carefully, particularly those that will improve collaboration between jurisdictions, support community safety, and help strengthen our capacity to respond to similar events of national significance in the future," reads the letter.

As of writing, the government managed to "make progress" on considering police reforms, bolstering financial sector security, and identifying and protecting critical economic corridors, reported CTV.

"Our priority remains to keep Canadians safe and protect our democracy, jobs, supply chains, and economy," LeBlanc told reporters as he pledged a comprehensive government response in February 2024.

A federal appeals court Friday revived a lawsuit by three doctors who say the Food and Drug Administration overstepped its authority in a campaign against treating COVID-19 with the anti-parasite drug ivermectin.

Ivermectin is commonly used to treat parasites in livestock. It can also be prescribed for humans and it has been championed by some conservatives as a treatment for COVID-19. The FDA has not approved ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment because studies have not proven it is effective.

The agency did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Friday's ruling from a panel of three judges on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal in New Orleans focused on various aspects of an FDA campaign against ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment.

The ruling acknowledged FDA's receiving reports of some people requiring hospitalization after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for livestock. But the ruling said the campaign — which at times featured the slogan “You are not a horse!” — too often left out that the drug is sometimes prescribed for humans.

The doctors can proceed with their lawsuit contending that the FDA's campaign exceeded the agency's authority under federal law, the ruling said.

“FDA is not a physician. It has authority to inform, announce, and apprise—but not to endorse, denounce, or advise,” Judge Don Willett wrote for a panel that also included Jennifer Walker Elrod and Edith Brown Clement. “The Doctors have plausibly alleged that FDA’s Posts fell on the wrong side of the line between telling about and telling to.”
Burning Man festival-goers trapped in desert by rain told to shelter in place

Tens of thousands of “burners” at the Burning Man festival have been told to stay in the camps, conserve food and water and are being blocked from leaving Nevada’s Black Rock desert after a slow-moving rainstorm turned the event into a mud bath.
Organizers responding to the unusual weather indicated the closures could endure, as local reports described the conditions at the festival as “treacherous” with “thick, slimy mud that clung to shoes and anything else it touched”.
“No driving is permitted on playa except for emergency vehicles,” event organizers said in a 5am statement on Saturday. “If you are in [Black Rock City], please shelter in place and stay safe.”

Burningman and Trench foot
PLAYA FOOT is a malady unique to the Black Rock Desert caused by the alkali dust that makes up the desert. It is, in essence, a chemical burn.
https://burningman.org › preparation › health-safety

Trench foot is caused by prolonged exposure to a cold temperature that is usually above freezing and damp, sometimes unsanitary conditions. The condition ultimately causes skin and tissue breakdown which increases the risk of infection and increases associated morbidity and mortality.

It was an incredibly harrowing 6 mile hike at midnight through heavy and slippery mud, but I got safely out of Burning Man. Never been before and it was fantastic (with brilliant art and fabulous music)…except the ending.
