Freedom Convoy personality Tamara Lich said Friday that her joint trial with Chris Barber has again recessed and she doesn’t expect the defense to begin summarizing its case until “hopefully 10 days in mid-March” 2024. That means a verdict shouldn’t be expected until at least the summer.

One should bear in mind that this trial began on the Tuesday after the Labor Day long weekend in September. 

The pair are charged with mischief, counseling others to commit mischief, intimidation, and obstructing police as members of the Freedom Convoy that polarized residents of Ottawa in 2022 and arguably began to roll back Covid mandates.

“I don't know why it's taking so long but it's true what they say in the Canadian legal system: the punishment is the process,” Lich told The Post Millennial in an exclusive interview.

Through a seemingly innocuous change to the definition of “electronic service communications provider,” the bill vastly expands the universe of U.S. businesses that can be conscripted to aid the government in conducting surveillance. 2/11
Under current law, the government can compel companies that have direct access to communications, such as phone, email, and text messaging service providers, to assist in Section 702 surveillance by turning over the communications of Section 702 targets. 3/11
Under Section 504 of the House intelligence committee’s bill, any entity that has access to *equipment* on which communications may be transmitted or stored, such as an ordinary router, is fair game. What does that mean in practice? It’s simple… 4/11
Hotels, libraries, coffee shops, and other places that offer wifi to their customers could be forced to serve as surrogate spies. They could be required to configure their systems to ensure that they can provide the government access to entire streams of communications. 5/11
Even a repair person who comes to fix the wifi in your home would meet the revised definition: that person is an “employee” of a “service provider” who has “access” to “equipment” (your router) on which communications are transmitted. 6/11
The bill’s sponsors deny that Section 504 is intended to sweep so broadly. What *is* the provision intended to do, and how is the government planning to use it? Sorry, that’s classified. 7/11
At the end of the day, though, the government’s claimed intent matters little. What matters is what the provision, on its face, actually allows—because as we all know by now, the government will interpret and apply the law as broadly as it can get away with. 8/11
This isn’t a minor or theoretical concern. One of the FISA Court amici posted a blog to warn Americans about this provision. I can’t overstate how unusual it is for FISA Court amici to take to the airwaves in this manner. We’d be foolish to ignore it. 9/11 
If you don't want to have to worry that the NSA is tapping into communications at the hotel where you're staying, tell your House representative to vote NO on the House intelligence bill this week. More on the many flaws with that bill here: 10/11 
Instead, they should vote for the Protect Liberty & End Warrantless Surveillance Act, a bill passed by the House Judiciary Committee on a 35-2 vote that would reauthorize Sec. 702 with strong reforms to protect Americans’ privacy and civil liberties. 11/11

ADL requests $100 million for grants to State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to conduct educational outreach and training on hate crimes and to investigate and prosecute hate crimes, as authorized by section 4704 of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act (Public Law 111--84).
ADL also requests $30 million for grants to support community-based approaches to preventing hate crimes through conflict resolution and community empowerment and education, which was included in the FY 2023 House appropriations bill. 1. HOMELAND SECURITY GRANT PROGRAM
In the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection, ADL created the PROTECT Plan – a comprehensive, bipartisan approach to mitigate the threat of domestic terrorism while protecting civil rights and liberties. As part of the PROTECT plan, ADL recommends measures to ensure Congress resources to the threats. Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas made fighting domestic violent extremism a “National Priority Area.” In FY 2021, for the first time, DHS declared Domestic Violent Extremism a National Priority Area, allowing states and local governments applying for the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) and Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant programs to avail themselves of a $77 million grant funding set aside to address related threats, 7.5 percent of the total awards. These resources are critical for states to create efforts to address the domestic violent extremist threat, a threat that is not a one-year threat, but ongoing and constantly evolving, and will require continuous funds. ADL asks that the Homeland Security Grant program be sufficiently funded in FY 2024, that no less than $77 million be set aside for combating domestic violent extremism, including threats stemming from misogynist extremists on and offline.

The money of billionaire philanthropist George Soros continues to be found in the darkest of places.

KSAT-TV in San Antonio first revealed a man charged with killing six people in a series of deadly shootings last week was previously bailed out of jail by the Texas Organizing Project.

The organization, which claims its purpose is to advocate for bail reform, has received more than $1.2 million from one of Soros’ liberal nonprofits, Fox News reported Thursday.

“The Open Society Policy Center, the advocacy nonprofit in the Soros-funded Open Society Foundations network, provided $700,000 to the Texas Organizing Project in 2019 for organizational support,” the outlet reported. “Later, in 2021, the policy center gave the group $565,000 to ‘support policy advocacy on democracy reform and government accountability in Texas,’ according to its grant database.”

Over the past six years, the NSA has obtained unprecedented access to the data processed by nine leading U.S. internet companies. This was facilitated by a computer network named PRISM. The companies involved include Google, Facebook, Skype, and Apple. Limitations on the NSA’s access are the source of current debate. Initial reports, which have since been qualified, said that the NSA can “pull anything it likes” from the companies’ servers. Government officials and corporate executives have responded that the NSA only obtains data with court approval and with the knowledge of the companies. Some companies have also denied knowledge of PRISM.

To collect the kind of phone records it did from Verizon, the government must obtain a Section 215 order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA court) — a federal court established under FISA which oversees government applications to conduct surveillance for the purposes of obtaining foreign intelligence. The request for the order, and the court’s ruling, are classified. The number of Section 215 orders has soared in recent years, from just 21 applications in 2009 to 212 applications in 2012. None of the applications in 2012 were denied by the FISA court. Classified reports about these applications are submitted to Congress’s intelligence and judiciary committees. Unclassified aggregate numbers, such as the above, are sent to Congress annually.

When it comes to Section 702, the law cited for PRISM, the FISA court’s role is more limited. Even though Section 702 does not allow the intentional surveillance of U.S. persons, the government is not required to go before the court to obtain individual surveillance orders. Instead, the court approves the “targeting” and “minimization” procedures described above to limit the amount of information about law-abiding Americans that is intercepted, retained, and disseminated. In deciding whether to approve the procedures, the court reviews whether they are consistent with the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. But it has no ongoing authority to determine if the government is complying with these procedures, and both the procedures and the court orders relating to them are classified. Some information about Section 702 programs must be reported to Congress’s intelligence and judiciary committees, including significant legal opinions of the FISA court. However, these reports are generally classified and not share.

The same questions can be raised about PRISM. Like Section 215, Section 702 is remarkably broad, allowing the government to target non-U.S. persons “reasonably believed to be outside the United States.” However, the NSA has reportedly interpreted that to mean that it need only ensure “51 percent confidence of the target’s ‘foreignness.’” Even if the process works as advertised, it could be wrong nearly half the time. '''Consequently, one of every two people targeted by the NSA may be an American citizen or located in the U.S. The NSA’s training materials call such collection “nothing to worry about.” And even if this practice is deemed consistent with Section 702, it is difficult to see how it comports with the Fourth Amendment, which requires the government to obtain a warrant for much of the information about U.S. persons that is being “inadvertently” collected.

4. COMBAT ANTISEMITISM ON COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES
Rising antisemitism is directly impacting Jewish students on college and university campuses across the country. For decades, a small but vocal segment of U.S. student groups and faculty on college campuses have espoused anti-Israel and anti-Zionist views. Anti-Israel rhetoric and activism can span the spectrum from the denial and vilification of the right of Jewish self-determination, to the propagation of classic antisemitic tropes. Over the past several years and through the current academic year, the prominence of anti-Israel and anti Zionist activities on campus appears to have continued to grow. As incidents surge, we must be aware of possible links between hateful rhetoric and violence; and students and faculty of all political stripes must do their best to engage in healthy and respectful dialogue.
