Guess only bots on 8kun because no one is there nor here. This is supposed to be our finest hour. Pathetic. Went to post with images and it takes the post, says it is updating but nothing happens, even after a refresh. Someone is playing games, again. Tell Jim to reboot both the 8Kun and image server.

I have two tabs opened of it. Only a new tab worked. I think it is the image server again, as the broken ones never seem to entirely load as the reload but spins forever, even though the bottom ad and image was showing, or someone is playing games.

Someone send a message to Jim to reboot both the image and 8kun server. Flood detection is saying that the servers are busy, and most lkkely the image server is in another state of flux because the browser reload button never loaded fully and that is a sign of graphics not loading. Did anyone read my earlier post regarding that? The images were going to the wrong URL and cycling between two bottom ads graphics that both had bad URLs.

Now just so you all know, all it takes is one person not getting the graphics from the bottom ad or last graphic to request to bad images and ping pong between each bad one. That would keep the image server busy and timing out until that faulty request is resolved.

Remember, PHP is single threaded. This will keep happening until the bad URLs are fixed. Either there is bad code or someone changed the src property of the image on purpose.

This is what I mean by, we have a ton of work to do still. This is an easy fix but all that was done was the servers were rebooted earlier. Let me make it clear: if the src property of an image is bad, the image server won't know until it tries the url and when it does it tells the 8kun server that that image didn't load so the 8 kun server tries another ad and image with a bad url and the image server does the same thing. It cycles between two bad requests, and that eats up all system's resources, bandwidth, and being that it is single threaded, the interrupts and both cannot break out of the bad cycle. I analyzed the URLS earlier and they were each looking for a graphic with a URL like this:

Which is an invalid address for a resource. It should be something like this:
https://softserve/some32randomcharactersendingin.jpg

Also notified morning BVs about the problems, will retire for now.

Bullshit, this follows the same pattern every time something big is supposed to happen. Reboot the image server and the 8kun server before you call it a night or have Jim do it.

ThankQ. I am 1000% sure of the problem earlier and as soon as I mentioned to reboot both servers, the problem was temporarily fixed. Like I said, all it takes is one person requesting a bad image URL and both servers eventually crash unless that person closes that connection or Jim terminates all connections, which he probably doesn't know how to do code wise. Jim needs to disable the bottom ad images, the last graphic on the page because that code toggles between ads where if an image on the board from a post is bad, it will just show a broken link. To make excuses of fiber channels and server upgrades is disingenuous, which is why I said someone is tampering with the URLs on purpose then, but I can tell you for a fact, this is really not the case. Because we see broken links all the time and I monitor them and see that they too time out. So it is something in how they are building up strings to make a resource request.

I wrote about this before. Think of a file system for a second:

Each softserve separated by a dot would be a folder. So if you have a URL that is looking through 100 folders within folders each named softserve, it does not resolve to an actual resource such as a .gif .jpg etc...

The URL for the images should be something like this

One folder and one resource ending in .jpg .gif .mp4 etc...

ThankQ, not blaming you, but I see the problem and know these things for sure. I told him earlier if you do not disable the ads at the bottom from the code base, the system will get back into this state again, and I was right. A bad URL in an anon's post would just show a broken image link and not try another image. The ad server at the top and bottom of the page cycle their images and both are capable of bringing down both servers.

Just wondering if anyone understands what I am saying? Is it that hard? This is an easy fix and we always run into the same problems. Sorry to disappoint you all, it is not the FBI, the Cabal, International Hackers, Network routing and Fiber Channels, nor Intergalactic Aliens. It is a bad string being formulated or purposely rewritten that is causing our own denial of service by timing out the servers due to bad request overloads.

ThankQ, not blaming you nor the engineers because most of the code was written by 150 different people over 3.5 years with contributions and many of the code base relies on other technologies such as WebDav, or 3rd party libraries like they do to everything into a simple table list, then glue it all with beginners programming language like PHP and this is what happens. Just so you know, a problem like this that doesn't get fixed at a top financial and your out the door, day 1, no excuses. This is the main reason that 8kun never worked perfectly since the start and that I am 100% sure of. Most it runs correctly, except images break which leads to system resource failures, frozen states, and all types of server errors.

I did mention for Jim to see if he can pin down a file called something to the affect of -batch.gif. A highly suspect name, although it could be a legitimate file with a poor name. A batch is a script and it is possible that that .gif file has a script inside the binary file that maybe a real hacker is posting to the site that is causing the PHP code to improperly form the URL. That would have to be from someone who knows the codebase or a pretty astute hacker. We will not know until that file is pinned down and dumped to where we can read it's contents. Possible but not probable.
