Why does the universe never get destroyed, despite how often it gets close? Is it because of insane but unreliable luck, or because of the anthropic principle, or because there's some sort of physical law that something will always stop it, no matter how bad the odds?

Good question, but if you're headed down that road you've got to also consider "why does the world never stay saved?" and "where were all these threats before the superheroes started showing up recently?"
