a good day to all you autists!! this might be of interest to you.

this is the Dasung 103 e-ink external touchscreen. that i early-adopted. was way too expensive and i just started using it.

i bought it because i wanted a way to use the computer and phone in bright daylight. what i now notice after using it a little is that it does not draw my attention. i think it is easier on the eyes but more importantly, it is easy on the attention. a normal beautiful screen is too visually stimulating. this remains more distant and unimportant.

i thought the e-ink technology was interesting back when the first kindle came out but i knew what amazon was gonna behave like so i avoided it until recently which was a big mistake. since i started using a very old (i think 14 years old) used kobo device, i am loving this and i wish i would have found this sooner. it's an ad for the usefulness of the technology, not for any particular product or manufacturer.

if you try to use a regular computer in the sunlight you will have to crank up the brightness so much that the device gets hot and drains the battery quickly and probably get hot just from being in the sun. i never knew how much this mattered because that means computers and devices generally draw people into the darkness but as i have read (on the little e-ink recently) the sun is very healthy and now i regularly lay in the sun in underwear with a little e-ink and i read. sunlight is needed for the human body and i have found books help me with reducing doom scrolling. so this little technology has made my life better.

there are all the dedicated little devices, most of which are too enshittified for me to bear. on aliexpress you can find one other dedicated e-ink screen that can also do 60 fps, i think it is cheaper but i don't know how good it is, i was only able to find one short video about someone using it.

another regretti i have is not looking into formats in which ebooks are available.

there is the .pdf file format. it has a layout that stays true to the way the person who saved the file made it, which can be nice to preserve the exact autism of the author or publisher but means the text can not re-flow, so when you try to read it on a little kobo, you can display it but it tries to display an entire page on a tiny screen, which is generally not usable.

there is the .epub file format which i think is free but it can include drm; not sure. the epub can re-flow, meaning it will look good even on a device with a small screen because the size of the letters can be chosen by the user. of course this means the intended autism-layout from the author or publisher is only respected in so far as to suggest a default font-style. i've seen little e-ink readers that are smaller then a smartphone even and with epub, a small device like that can be useful. it is easier to edit epub with a program like calibre but it is just a type of zip so you could just open it with a program that understands .zip and .rar files and remove/edit/add the textfiles, image-files and folders that make it up. I DIDN'T KNOW SOMETHING SO NICE EXISTED!

then there are other proprietary file formats like .mobi (that was bought by amazon) or .AZW, .AZW3, .KF8, .KFX (which were made by amazon. i stay away from those.
