There are several things here:
1) "We heard from people close to these two researchers that they have solved this big conjecture so we start a 1 week 20 million project to do the same thing and announce it together" is trully an insane bitch move
2) They probably did not access the chat, but they do train on everybody's chat and people now suspect they're good at it, meaning your discussion might actually help the next model solve your problem
Regardless of this incident these models are so good that people are having huge existencial crisis. Not me though, I'm a french civil servant, worst case I just have more time for biking
