We had about 3cm of snowfall this weekend and now have minus degrees all week with some more snowfall coming in on Wednesday. It's very nice for the mental state to finally have some light.

What are snow shifts? Thanks for asking. During the night when we don't ride, if it is very cold the electrical wires could get frozen. So they will send some træens to ride around and keep everything working. Since I always work late anyway I was like sure what the hell. Driving around with no passengers is always nice. You also get double money for the hours you work then, plus at the end of winter the aforementioned bonus.

> Short answer: Yes — overhead (catenary/contact) wires can ice up in sub‑zero conditions, and that ice can disrupt current collection.

< Why it happens (concise)

    >Moisture (fog, freezing rain, wet snow, hoar frost) deposits on the wire and freezes, forming an insulating layer.
    >Ice on the contact wire prevents consistent physical contact between the pantograph carbon strip and the live conductor, causing loss of electrical contact and arcing.
    >Accumulated ice can also form lumps that damage the pantograph or the wire geometry.

< Operational effects

    >Intermittent or lost power to trains, arcing, blown fuses/trips, higher wear on pantograph carbon strips, and sometimes stranded or reduced‑speed services.
    >In severe cases equipment trips or insulation damage can occur.

< Typical mitigations

    >Running “icebreaker” or empty “ghost” trains with poorly paid train conductors to mechanically clear ice.
    >Special ice‑scraping or vibrating pantograph attachments.
    >Chemical anti‑icing/de‑icing sprays applied to the wire.
    >Local heating (rarely used due to cost) or targeted heating at critical components.
    >Operational measures: reduced speeds, planned service changes, extra inspections during cold snaps.

Fairlight Strael 58R unused, and a Tideace Noah in size XL. I listed the Strael on Buycycle. I can also make a nice offer for a Sram groupset to go with it, and for the Tideace I can also sell you a Sram AXS XPLR 12s cassette + rear derailleur + shifters/brakes to go with it.

in small (not XXL) frame sizes like this it blocks anything but a 500 ml bottle but other than that I think its a good idea. I would much prefer to have a framebag over stuffing my jersey pockets
some of my friends have frames with small boxes in the space between the bottle cages and the bb area, also a good idea as saddle bag replacement

genuine question whats the difference between one steel frame and another
you can buy (allegedly) pretty good quality steel frames+fork from seaboard/tsunami on aliexpress for like 400 bucks
whats the difference between this thing, a standert and whatever the dozen or so other steel frame brands are cooking up at various other price points geometry and paintjob aside

 >>/53946/
With Fairlight, you are paying for vey thought-out design and best tubing possible. They are using custom made Renolds tubing to get the best combination of vertical compliance, lateral stiffness and low weight. Their ride quality is supposedly superior to none because of this – see practically every review of their bikes getting 5 stars out of 5. Second thing is their design is always incredibly well thought out, be it how the cable guides work, how the modular dropouts are designed, how dynamo lighting is incorporated – everything works far better than other brands. The design notes are beautiful: https://media.fairlightcycles.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Fairlight-Strael-4.0-Design-Notes-v1.1.pdf
You just don't see anything like this from instagram brands like Standert.

"Maybe the Amstel Gold Race too, but that depends on how I come out of the Tour of the Basque Country. After that, the Vuelta will be my first Grand Tour, and I'll close the season with the Tour of Lombardy. I'm really looking forward to it – we can only dream and do our best. It'll be a voyage of discovery, you know. I'm very curious about that."

I did some seated sprints again today. These really suck on the trainer, keeping the power up for the whole 20s is just incredibly hard. Stuck at around 900W for 20s, so not too far off my standing power (I think best ever is something like 1050W).

Do you have an option to work part time because of the child? Boom, 10-20h more to ride each week
Speaking of longer rides, did this easy ride this morning. I've adopted a lower longer position and it's making my HR higher for the same watts, but doesn't feel too bad. Power/HR still lagging quite a bit after spending 2 weeks off the bike.

 >>/54024/
You're kinda absolved if your job involves riding a bike a lot or you're getting old but otherwise why would you take away from yourself an opportunity to move a bit with your muscles only, why have an *-"bike".

 >>/54028/
I know if I lived somewhere with mountains and nice trails, an e-gravel or mtb would be great so that you could still pedal those trails even on your easy/recovery days. Similarly for riding in the snow I guess.

 >>/54088/
 >>/54089/
the key to riding these is to be strong enough to be in the very front group, if you ride in the groups that follow or god forbid one of the main packs that has hundreds of people you're asking for trouble. It's probably better to ride alone without a group or in a small group of friends over anything but the very front group

I reckon every single hill turns into a z4/5 low cadence suffering
actually I retract my statement, it does make you stronger than normal training because it's not on your terms, you can't just call it quits if you're struggling too much up a hill like you could without the load. You either defeat the hill or its over

No, too small to really hold anything, too big to be unobtrusive and aesthetic.
My mtb has mounted a bigger bag with a small front rack, it easily to dismount and remount, doubles as shoulder bag.

Love cold weather hiking. Only thing that stinks is hard to find water.

Around this time last year I went camping in a national forest. When I hiked in (maybe 15 km?) to my site it was like -5 C. Overnight it warmed up despite no indication on the forecast and it started raining. I hiked back out in pouring rain and partially flooded trails in like 2 degree temps. I thought I was going to die.

Maybe, the only issues I have is when it's really pouring combined with sub 5 degrees temps so I figure some cheaper overshoes will solve this instead of going all in.
It's mostly my toes and ankles that get wet and then start cooling off really fast despite riding through puddles all commute.

> "I speak to Javier every day; he's a great guide and the interaction is perfect," Pogacar said of the 39-year-old Sola, who took over as trainer/coach from Iñigo San Millán after 2023. "As for Gorka, he's one of the hardest-working people I've ever seen. He creates individual nutrition plans, all different, for 30 riders... The nutrition is almost perfect now. Until a few years ago, I found it difficult to stick to it, but now I understand how important it is. How much of a difference it can make in performance."
> In the same interview, Pogacar also indirectly criticized the aforementioned Iñigo San Millán, the man who trained him before Javier Sola took over. To the journalist's observation that Pogi wants to live a normal life, the world champion replied: "Indeed. My former coach, for example, pointed out to me that footballers often have a private chef, someone who does the shopping, someone who takes care of the house... Well, that's not for me, for Urska and me."

> The report says that Campagnolo has recorded losses exceeding €24 million across the 2023, 2024 and 2025 financial years. The company attributes this to a challenging sector-wide downturn that has affected many manufacturers following the surge in demand during the pandemic era.

speaking of friday sales power2max offers a 250€ discount code for every pm on their page, that's a genuinely great offer and about the only worthwhile thing I saw at all. Other than that is is fake discounts or selling products that are yesterday's snow that's been sitting in the warehouse for too long tsk

elite wheels had some good deals where they just gave you xxx$ off if you spent a certain amount, if anyone's looking for some rounder wheels
think you could gets some 50mm wheels for sub 900 bucks when I was looking 2 weeks ago

I genuinely like the new Campag SR especially because of its gearing – the 9-10-11-12-13-14-16-18-21-25-30-36-42 is far better than Sram's 13 speed offering. But I dislike the fact that I would be stuck with the overpriced and heavy Campag crankset/chainring.
The resident paypig of our club who has a dozen 10k+ fred sleds will probably build a new bike with the Campag SR 13s, so I can ask him for a review then.

> "The pie could be divided more fairly." Wout van Aert (31) is a rider who thinks beyond his bike. About the financial sustainability of the race, for example. From an interview in 'De Tijd': "If you charge a 5 euro entrance fee, that doesn't mean it's not more popular."

> He's considering the American NBA, among other things, as an interesting revenue model. "When I see how the NBA controls its playing field, yet still lets the teams share in the TV revenue, cycling could learn a lot from that."

> "In cycling, we're perhaps a little too focused on charm and the popular atmosphere. Charging 5 euros for entry doesn't mean it's not popular anymore. Cyclocross also charges an entry fee, and there's nothing more popular."

I can't wait till this absolute loser retires, fag does one trip of america and can't stop licking corporate boots

> Correct me if I'm wrong, but a major race like the Ronde or the Tour depends entirely on us, the riders and teams who participate. Yet, as a team, we don't even receive sufficient compensation to cover the costs of participating. That seems like a minimum to me. The pie could be divided more fairly.

hopefully he puts his money where his mouth is and the team doesn't participate in the tour then, oh wait
enjoy riding crits for the saudies then

> The two-time Tour de France winner originally trained for a job in banking. "I always said I wanted to do something with numbers, probably something in banking. I've always been good with numbers," said Vingegaard, who studied business economics before becoming a professional cyclist. However, during his cycling career, he discovered there's one thing he enjoys even more.

> "After I grew up and renovated my own house, I discovered I enjoyed DIY more than I thought," said the Dane, who is quite open to a future career as a carpenter. "That's quite possible. Time will tell. I'm very fascinated by carpentry."

> In any case, the chance that we'll find Vingegaard behind the wheel of a team car is slim. "I don't really think I'll stay in cycling if I stop. I think I'll just enjoy being at home with my family and being there for them. I don't really know what I want yet, but I'll figure it out."

remodeling that kitchen really did a number on him

You've got to hand it to Puck. She could've just kept making thirst traps and doing 30 minute rides and DNFing every race and I'm sure she'd still have a big social media presence.

She actually underwent surgery with the intent of getting stronger and faster. Gravel WC when?

This bitch just has Munchhausen syndrome, there is always something horrible happening to her so she can keep getting attention. The recovery will of course be "longer than expected" and "very difficult", etc etc

I paypigged some winter clothes as well, hope they are good enough so I will actually do an outdoor ride once per week. The ones I bought earlier were good for 0-5 degree weather but for proper minus degrees I needed warmer bib tights and a better base layer.

I can't do what you rapists do but man, these morning shop runs with a poor man's "intervals" between intersections are glorious, especially in the winter.
People can just do it and they don't, there's no reason to be alive if you can't do pedal.
Hope having a family won't derail that, remote wagie life helps a lot.

I have seen a bober again yesterday, at least it had the decency to dip into the water as soon as it was clear someone is getting close, not like that fat ass on saturday, completely ignoring my substantial presence, in my biggest jacket.

> "During our December camp, there's never really a clear plan," says Politt, who swapped the then BORA-hansgrohe for UAE Emirates in the winter of 2023-2024. "Some teams do team time trial training, some do lead-outs. With us, it's just full throttle."

> And by "full throttle," the German really means full throttle. "I remember a training ride from last year where I looked at the data afterward. The numbers were exactly the same as in the Tour of Flanders, where I finished third (in 2024, ed.). And this was during a training session."

Why don't other teams just train harder?

Kolie from Empirical Cycling talks how he started out as a 1200W sprinter and managed to improve about 100W per season by focusing on dedicated sprint training and gym. His best numbers are in the low 2000W's I think, transitioned into a track sprinter because he wasn't good aerobically.

 >>/54829/
Don't really know, but maybe? Probably? I almost never do anything sprint-like outside, but I did some long-standing PB numbers outdoors a few years ago at a time where my indoor numbers were way lower. I'm somewhat terrified I'll drop my chain or unclip at the worst possible time and heem myself brutally as certain other berts have done for no real gain. At this point I'd probably have to retrain my form for outdoors sprinting also.
 >>/54831/
I think a lot. I've never really trained sprinting apart from doing them at the end of Zwift races and I just added roughly 5% on top by just a few weeks of vo2 and sprint workouts. Not even any gym work.
