As I'd figured. 
IMs have mostly killed imageboards out of their vastly superior convenience; I can't even find a silly thread to play some silly game for nostalgia's sake without stumbling across a circlejerk who all utilize discord, all while still managing to shit up their own thread with petty drama.
I don't mean that disparagingly, I'll killed my own board by moving everyone to skype almost a decade ago.

It does come down to what provided the value, the people and culture associated, or the board itself? I think it's more to do with the former. Not everyone thought the same, but we still keep in touch through here. However, I do think that it's a bit of a shame that we've pretty much killed all discoverability about ourselves.

It's also not the first imageboard we had to go through either, so I don't think changing the medium we communicate from is too much different from that.

The greatest travesty of the death of 8chan wasn't its own death, it was that the code released enabled hundreds of chans to be spawned off of it. Where 8chan had a board for each topic, it feels like there's an entire site for each topic now.
There's just a certain charm to posting on imageboards in my own opinion. That's probably just my inner schizoid talking, though.

Except we got to see all the problems that centralisation brought with 8chan. The owner no longer cared about the website and started neglecting its own maintenance, ultimately killing all the communities that were there.
