Welcome Pony Life discussion thread. An unexpected entry to the My Little Pony Franchise that appears to share many of the characters and concepts from Friendship is Magic.

Will it live up to the hype? Will it be able to carry the torch of FiM's legacy? Will it prove itself more than what it appears to be: a cheap stopgap measure?

 Probably not.

erm....I am posting these again from the NMAiE thread. Let´s see how much contrast there is between the reviews and the ones from other places...

Alright. This was both easy and hard, as summarizing the episodes in simple enough but there is also issues on the side that I wasn't really sure were to put and went through a couple of different drafts (over Pony Life!). So here is how I felt of each episode, but it's not really a review.

Princess Probz:
How do I feel about this one? Honestly it was halfway decent for what it was. It didn't make me Seethe or anything, but it did show how this show is weaker compared to FiM and I'm not sure it showed the advantages of it's format (weirdly potions were only a minor part, strange considering that suppose to be the gimmick) . It jumped around a mile a minuet with gags but it didn't have elements that could've made it funnier, like a more drawn out dramatic tension. Just a bunch of characters and tiny jokes with less structure. While FiM would've had it slowly build up and could've spent more time with the actual cooking segment. How much of that is the fault of the writing or is it simply me being used to 22 minuets? IDK, but that's how I felt.
5/10

Best of the Worst:
Liked this one less. The art style showed some of the more negative aspects: don't like the design of Dishwater Slog and that blue pony. I don't like either of them as characters, seemed like generic characters from something non-FiM, as stupid as that sounds . I just didn't like them and I felt this episode honed in on the negative aspects of both the art and feel of this in a way that's hard to describe atm.
2/10

So that was a ramble now wasn't it? That was just how I felt over each episode over a real attempt at a bonafide review. A lot of the issues to me feel more like general questions of the series over problems with an episode. Prepare for my ramble

This show's format is slightly weird. If you didn't watch it. Each segment has a part 1 and part 2 with a title card. My guess is so that this show can be later broken up into segments for youtube uploading. I wouldn't call it a deal breaker but it does feel weird to have this second title card pop up in the middle of the show.

The tone feels off to FiM but not completely as bad as it could be. More like a bastard child over something completely alien world in a FiM coating. The mane 6 feel close to there FiM selves with the performance sometimes being a bit off, at least to me. Rarity and Pinkie sound the most normal. Fluttershy the most off. My bet is that characters that relied on any nuance or subtly will probably be the most off putting to be here (Celestia!). Coolest form of this would be if they took traits of characters or popular fan memmes and made them for a more comedic take. Say, gamer Luna or a openly psychopathic Dolores. Worst form and one that I think is entirely possible would be to just reduce such side characters to their archetypes. It would not be their take on Princess Celestia. It would just be the roll of generic power figure, who just so happens to be named, Princess Celestia.

The real question is: is there anything to be had for a FiM fan, either the adult fandom or one who has grown up with FiM? I mean, there was a little bit of an acknowledgement: AJ saying she missed Rarity's freakouts and looking at the camera. Was Rarity's brief film noir gag a reference to Rarity Investigates? Now honestly I know the comics are for the older fans and this is a stopgap measure to sell toys and have a theme before G5, but there is still some interesting stuff they could do that wouldn't violate that mission. If they market it to Adult FiM fans (heck, even target demo FiM fans to an extent) and they don't do anything that takes advantage of the new show other than a superficial or simplistic icing than I would hold it as a mark against it in quality.

Quickie Note: they apparently had a version of Twi without wings. It's interesting to see her start out as a Princess. Did they intent for her to ascend in a comical manner? Was it just a miscomucation? Was she oringally supposed to be just a unicorn?

Thx!

 >>/6267/
Well, I guess the TLDR is that: it wasn't a dumpster fire but it felt off putting and there was a lot that I disliked even if it didn't go to trash heap level. Though I admit that there is still a chance to retain some respect and there is too many questions for me to completely discard it.

> Earth Pony Twilight

I wonder if that'll ever be reality or is Tara right and there will be no Twi. I mean, the leaks did say they were changing vocal cast so she could be in the dark but Hasbro just as easily could have changed plans.

> 8ch (nearly) memed themselves out of a fandom.

The price of purity, yet when one looks around at the forces that sometimes encroach I can't fully blame them, even if I find they can be much too bitter at times. I share a lot of those inclinations as well, just not as extreme.

What are your thoughts on Pony Life? If you have bothered to watch it that is.

I've watched about four minutes of the first episode, and I do have some opinions.

There was a college instructor review that got passed around the internet once, to the tune of "teaches like Speedy gonzalez on a caffeine high"
The dialogue here is like that. They're cramming in as many syllables per second as they can, and everypony seems to be running pel mel everywhere resulting in an initial impression that their primary audience are the ADHD kids whose dosages have not recently been re-examined for effectiveness.

Also, pony puns were severely lacking. Combined with the designs that exaggerate the head, chibi style to the point where you can barely see they have hooves or, indeed are quadrupedal at all and I find the eleven minute run time fully explained.

This is the visual equivalent of flash fiction.

Because of the incredibly short time for set-up and denouement you can only tell tales that are archetypal and already in your head. If you were expecting a tail about pony tails, you'll see it, if not you'll associate their ramblings with a newspaper article you read last week, or whatever.
Not only is there nothing original in this series, they've engineered around any need to attempt anything original. Consider AJ's comment early in the first episode, _aimed at the camera_ of
> "Did you miss this? *I* Missed this."
This is Rehash:The series, designed to give anime weebs a small dopamine hit while offering much the same size hit to bronies who can't find anything else to watch yet.

Hasbro, I am disappoint.

(heh; in trying to find a ponified "son i am disapoint" reaction image I came across this flash-fiction about Luna's dream-pupil sorta screwing up her friends dreams. Yay earth-pony-magic?)

The art style has been bugging me the more and more I look upon it.

I fully agree with this here.

Is it even aimed at us though? My impression is that this just for kids with some half hearted attempt to market it to our fandom. The vague Chibi style was chosen because its cheap and attractive to kids. Their little deformed bodies and oversized heads seem like an emulation of stuff like the LOL dolls and the Fingerlings shorts.

Well, you both have shared quite a few thoughts here.

It doesn´t seem that this spin off was aimed to anyone else beyond its target audience, does it?

Perhaps Hasbro is trying to appeal to kids that love looking at flashy instant animations from Youtube, hence the short amount of time for each episode before gen 5 gets announced.

Will that strategy work for expanding the market to a new generation of kids by adapting their format to kids who are are more attracted to games like Fornite or humor based shows a la Teen Titans Go?

We´ll see but so far, Derpi only has 2k pictures related to this spin-off and /mlp/ doesn´t seem to be losing their minds all that much.

https://www.equestriadaily.com/2020/06/the-art-director-for-ponly-life-did.html

I am linking the EQD article that compiles a few responses from the art director (who worked on Rainbow Roadtrip as well). It doesn´t offer anything revelatory but it´s officially Gen 4.5 and the whole spin-off happens in an alternate universe. Because of that statement, this whole thing will be easier to dismiss for the fans if it doesn´t pan out in the end.

Anyway, Proof of Life Shitpost.

Just gonna throw this out there.

Bolder Media has posted two job openings, using a pic with Pony Life versions of the mane 5 (Pinkie Pie oddly enough not there) for "super secret Netflix show." Which could have some interesting implications, all admit, even if I am skeptical of it being anything. If I was going to rate the likelihood of outcomes for this, it would be:

1: Nothing. Animation companies use past work they have done in demos and promotions all the time on projects unrelated. I don't see why this would be any different, but...

2 I will admit this does feel like a little tense. With these characters and the attitude of "shhhhhhhhhhhh, super secret!" perhaps it is something Pony Life or at least pony related. Hasbro has been experimenting a lot with secondary spin offs and projects and it would make sense for them to make something; especially since the Generation 5 series was transferred over from Boulder media and supposedly mostly funded now by Netflix, maybe that would free up some resources or create a need to give Boulder Media something to do? Though I am uncertain it would make sense for it to be more Pony Life.

So they are 22min episodes. Why not cut them into five quibis? Sorry, just re-watched Shade Nocturne's review of awful ads and quibi gets an award for deepest cringe.

I was amused that my first re-encode of this ep was 11mb. Eleven minutes, eleven megabytes. I could probably shrink it more but that's not the specific effect I'm looking to create with this post.

The effect is to spotlight the ... sound two different ponies have made.

you'll hear it right at the very end of the "we're in a simulation" clip in
 >>/7643/

and since Pony Life has the same VAs, I guess Dash making that sound at the 2m mark makes a kind of sense but
< It sounds like belching, not a verbal addition.
And I still go back to that short clip just to laugh at AJ when she tries to respond and can't

Wow, that does sound like a burp noise, don't it?

> quibis?
Oh, that trash fire!? Oh, my, I had forgotten about quibi. What a horror. That was the most meteorically run thing ever. not to get political, but when watching the Republicans for Biden section of the Democratic convention, they had the CEO of quibi speak Don't trust their judgement. From suppressing their few fans to being a poorly manufactured corporate hypetrain, they sucked all around...

What was this thread about again, oh yeah, Pony Life.
