I think they just like the attention. Normies don't need anonymity because anonymity gets in the way of drawing attention to themselves. Also, for many people on imageboards, the design is awkward. They're used to Reddit, Twitter, and so on out of habit.

They're too culturally different from the mainstream. People can get what they want more easily from Discord/Twitter/Etc.
