Even putting fandom politics aside, Gloom had to be one of the most flanderized OCs next to Lyra and Lacy. Dishonorable mentions to Lupa and Lyle. Actually, I think the latter may be debatable.

Lyra = Ultra-religious
One of the most annoying and irritating traits. It’s even persistent.
“Oh, but since I’m religious, incest is wrong. Oh, my brother’s/Lincoln’s penis? I’m going to suck it… b-but incest is wrong.”
And that’s how they’ve been messing around with that persistent trait of Lyra’s.

Lacy = Sports, but I’m a ditz.
It’s not the worst… but I wish they’d explore beyond her “sports” trait.
Her being a ditz or a “chill” girl… well, that’s part of her charm. They don’t usually overdo it with that.

Lupa = Edgy
Even though she’s not that edgy right now, at least they managed to make her a better character.
I never understood the point of Lupa smoking when she didn’t even have any problems or anything like that… it was just… smoking for the sake of smoking.

Lyle = Femboy, long eyelashes.
To this day, they’re still trying to make him a 100% femboy. They literally only use him for gay porn… sad. I really liked the character development around him being agile or his somewhat refined tastes that they were giving him until Midgar had to ban it because “oh, ummm, Chip developed it, and since I don’t like him, that development is banned. lol. lmao even.”

I’d even add Cleo with that nonsensical trait about her being Egyptian and liking things just because she’s Egyptian. Did I already mention that she’s Egyptian and that’s supposed to be her defining characteristic?

But anyway, Dove and Nevy’s art has been really refreshing in that, they don’t even seem to take the “Egyptian” trait too much into account, and instead they make her look like a true character and not just an Egyptian stereotype.

Lyle, I was more referring to when people were trying to make him a flawless chad that all the girls wanted, etc. Now that I think about it, I don't really see any content with Lyle nowadays besides that Domino Effect fanfic.

They still need to find the right balance for Lupa between being a bratty, troublemaking girl and a good girl. At least she’s not acting like a total pain in the ass anymore, which is good progress.

As for Lyle, honestly, I’ve never seen those moments, or maybe I just don’t remember. The last time I saw Lyle was in some porn scene with Lincoln or the guys.


But things like certain scenes with Lola or the arc or stuff like that, which were really great to watch, aren't there anymore.
They've flanderized “the femboy trait” really badly.

I'm on the fence about the fandom coming up with Lupa smoking and the reasons why for anything but edginess, but this was during the moody deconstruction and edgy period of the fandom so maybe it really was because of the looming 'We're products of incest.' 'This is so weird and messed up'. 
But, if we dig deeper and drop all that other stuff, the smoking could point to Lupa secretly being anxious and possibly depressive (Not miserable Loan failqueen levels but enough to make her find a coping mechanism) and points to her edginess as being an act or shield. It could also point to her trying it out of curiosity or finding a sense of rebellion with it.

The legal issues thing is just one option. Could be something else, like Lincoln or Lisa dragging the family away on some adventure or quest. With Leia and Lizy, the initial idea was that Lindsay Sweetwater did it to get one over on Lola, them being rivals and all. But an episode of the actual show came out where they became allies, so that can be up in the air.
