It's now October, a favorite of many in art and fandom because of spooky  spooky theming. I will admit to having some slightly mixed feelings on Halloween (this part of the year is a fav on paper from sentimentality and high personal significance ) but I think my main gripe is how the stores stocked things in August. I do love comfy spooks and Nightmare Night themed things for sure.

A nice touch in this episode is that Zecora has become so accepted that now she's part of the official festival celebrations. It also serves to foreshadow the role Luna will learn to similarly fill: Zecora was once feared by the inhabitants of Ponyville, but now her scariness is a sort of accepted asset. Also, giving up some of your candy to Nightmare Moon is a pretty cunning way to avoid sugar rushes amongst the foals and fillies. Might come in handy for human halloween. 

Princess Luna then descends in her unnecessarily gothic chariot and creepy grim reaper cloak. I've heard people call people who care about the Luna change unnecessarily autistic, but... This is fairly over the top, especially compared to what we've seen before. And what we've seen before, to be clear, whilst not a lot, is definitely not this stridently gothic figure, and furthermore we've seen her in daylight before pretty much all of Ponyville. Going with best faith interpretation, Luna's more demure demeanor prior and her differing appearance could perhaps, at a stretch, be due to her powers being drained by 1000 years of being Nightmare Moon, having just been blasted with the Elements and having been expelled to the moon for so long, and this could be a post-recovery Luna, so to speak. Really, the worst element here is the reaction of the residents of Ponyville. This does go on to be addressed in the episode, that people know she's reformed but are acting scared nonetheless, however, this is a little widespread and just feels off. Not a serious rewrite suggestion given budgetary considerations, but setting this as the Nightmare Night of a different town with which the Mane Six are helping out would aid the believability considerably. For Luna to come back to Ponyville SPECIFICALLY and garner this reaction is what's odd. Indeed poor Luna has quite logically made the most sensible decision possible for gaining acceptance and yet she gets this sort of reception. 

Then we get Luna's Royal Canterlot Voice, and I can't really think of a best faith interpretation. Luna may well be busy with managing dreams, whatever her bat ponies are and getting back into her night-ruling job generally, but it has by now been at least a year, probably a little more since she returned. Has Celestia made no effort to reintroduce her to society in all that time? As a declarative voice it does it's job just fine, but she hasn't brought announcers? Celestia gets a ground retinue and trumpets and parades, and Luna has just her chariot and has to announce her arrival herself. And faced with total lack of respect, Luna resorts to having to declare a humiliating retreat without a "traditional royal farewell". A traditional royal farewell, I must note, that would seemingly lack any of the pomp and circumstance with which Celestia allows herself to be arrayed. I can accept the difficulties of a pre-industrial bureaucracy, but this is pathetic. I dislike this for how demeaning it is to Luna as a character, I dislike this for the absurdity of the situation and how bad it makes Celestia look, I even somewhat dislike the smearing of Mayor Mare, who may not be the most competent pony ever, but she does not even try to get herself together. In-universe, why did Celestia not present Luna back into society at the Grand Galloping Gala? It may even have come round again since the one we saw last season. That's the way to go about it, first have her re-enter Canterlot society, reach acceptance there, then do a proper introductory tour following on from there. You cannot tell me Celestia is too busy to do that but not too busy to greet guests at said Gala. At that stage, and between this episode and Sweet and Elite, the Unicorn aristocracy centred in Canterlot are more politically significant and powerful than the Princess of the Night, a situation which ought only to exist if Celestia actively cannot get rid of it, the implications of which I also dislike.

I could go on and on, but the core of the issue is really the same as the much more simple complaint of how Luna is being presented, extremely different both in terms of she herself, and in terms of how people are treating her. It feels like an incongruous u-turn that I think was more pushed in service of the halloween theme and the lesson that was held in mind, which, from a writing perspective is of course fair enough. Those are the concerns that probably should come first in writing a children's show and, since I've mentioned theme and lesson seeming to come first before, it seemingly is the concerns some writers were putting first. Nonetheless, it is unavoidable that this episode does Luna really, really dirty and honestly doesn't fix things too much by the end. The best I could say about where things end up is that Luna seemingly, at least within the conclusion of this episode, has a more down-to-earth, honest, open and friendly relationship with her subjects than the fawning worshipfulness with which Celestia is treated, which seems to even tire Celestia at times. However, this obviously doesn't stick around and I think without a status quo change never was going to stick around, so it just ends up being one of those odd technically alright episodes that just has unfortunate consequences. 

Having said that, I do like the relationship between Twilight and Luna a great deal... When we're not having this stupid Royal Canterlot Voice business. Being banished to the moon explains nothing on that front, Luna, you were Nightmare Moon for those 1000 years, and whilst I could believe Nightmare Moon spent 1000 years shouting at nothing up there, why has nobody told you to shut it yet after a year down on Equestria again? And how can you just forget the concept of speaking normally when you yourself explicitly said the Royal Canterlot Voice is for addressing one's subjects? That more than anything else might bother me most about this episode, what a stupid idea. Write another draft, bin the royal autism voice, for goodness sake. Anyway, back to the good: Twilight gets to live out every bookworm's dream of getting to be an old historical figure's guide to the modern day. I think probably every theory-obsessed Marxist has dreamed of showing old Karl around a supermarket and every historian has dreamed of seeing what Napoleon thinks of France today. If anything I think that angle wasn't explored enough, indeed wouldn't Twilight be familiar with the Royal Canterlot Voice? She acts unfamiliar with it, but she's familiar with the prophecy of Nightmare Moon's return, and she's familiar with Starswirl who, going off of Luna's reaction, was significant in around the same era. There is such a thing as these customs, even quite well-known ones for their time, simply being forgotten, however that's significantly harder to swallow when we have Celestia, who does not seem to have any memory problems, still walking around. If giving interviews for biographies and histories isn't one of her primary duties then Equestria has a serious failing. 

All in all, this isn't really one that I enjoyed rewatching, which made it a little harder to review. And it's probably pretty clear that I don't like it all that much personally, but I would say it seems perfectly competently written in most respects, and has a perfectly good lesson at heart... But I think I'd say something like 5.4. I wouldn't prefer not to watch it altogether, which is what I think of under-5s as, but the enjoyment is fairly minimal, so it ekes it out above 5.

I can relate to this , though I also enjoy comfy spooks and sometimes eerie or haunting things, especially in my adult years, I usually liked sitting out from stuff like that, rollercoasters, the most childish, G rated transformation into a vampire, etc.

Would she be over the top compared to Nightmare Moon though? How much spooky factor would a good Princess Luna have? I do agree that a non-spooky Princess Luna in her old form has some appeal! Old Luna versus New Luna I prefer both Lunas.

I think you are overthinking this (but that is fun! I do it too). I disagree on the basis of it being a an element we know little on, would she need announcers? Maybe she prefers doing it herself? Spur of the moment flight? It's an element we don't have a strong set rule on established. Though I think I can raise a good argument against it: Nightmare Moon didn't use it, and Nightmare Moon was trying to intimidate!

Not something that personally bugs me but have been in this position in later seasons, including possibly with Luna herself of all things, but it is from a part of the show where I consider my watching the weakest in memory and viewership.

It could be that after 1000 years everypony thinks Nightmare Moon is fictional. If so, then that would explain why Ponyville in particular panicked at Luna visiting, in which case the reverse of what I said would be true and Luna ought to have visited anywhere but Ponyville!

I'm in agreement with you, it makes more sense for Twilight to have some personal affection towards what at this stage is a relatively obscure figure in the history of magic if she would have had to become familiar with his work at a younger, more formative age.

As mentioned in my post, he is specified by the epithet "the bearded", similar to how William I was William the Bastard/Conqueror - because after all, there were many Williams. However, when you have particularly significant historical figures, you do this much less frequently. Like if I said Kennedy to refer to JFK, for instance, I could probably get away with that and people would know what I meant, whereas for any of the less famous Kennedys I probably wouldn't do that. I would think that the guy we see later in the series would simply be *the* Starswirl, but here he's always specified as "the bearded".

The Owlowiscious episode where Twilight describes a comet in fairly precise scientific terms makes me uncertain. It could have just been throwaway lines, or it could not have been. I sort of like what Fallout Equestria went for with the stars being almost Lovecraftian.

Well also if you rely on something other than yourself to fix something, you'll be worse off if ever you're without the thing you rely on. Plus we've all been on the internet long enough to understand what someone means even with typos and errors. I'd vastly prefer to go back to terrible grammar and spelling, than having to read the squeaky-clean polished corpospeak that abounds everywhere these days.

I would agree, but for one little bit of the episode: when they go to get voice lessons from Fluttershy and Luna has to actively struggle to speak normally. That's really stupid, especially since it's been set aside as the Royal Canterlot Voice specifically for speaking to subjects, and yet she can't physically speak in a non-declarative voice. It would imply that she hasn't even spoken to Celestia since being freed - even though we heard her do so in the first episode and she talked normally. To be honest this particular point of the episode is just so stupid, talking too loud from being alone all the time is one thing, I had that as a kid, but that isn't what this is set up as and communicated as.

Well, she's doing announcing, so I'd say so!

Maybe, but then why all her references to tradition and stuff? Would that not just be her preference rather than tradition if she's acting just out of preference?
She could prefer a tradition but if so she's either butchering the tradition or the tradition is really stupid, it's exhausting to have to be a leader AND a leader's secretary and retinue and staff all at once as one person, it's a completely unreasonable workload to place even upon someone as lowly as a mayor, let alone a monarch. Either she's a stickler for tradition and the tradition is nonsensical, or she's doing things wrong because of lack of resources/preference, in which case she's either deliberately or non-deliberately breaking with tradition.

What if the changelings won?

This wouldn't be a covert rebellion story, Star Wars style, but more like the movie Daybreakers, in which most of humanity had converted to sunlight-hating vampires, and the few humans were hunted primarily by the government exactly because there were too few of them to let the general public thoughtlessly tear apart the last of the breeding stock of the only food they could eat.

So, in this world the changelings could smell love from some distance, but not miles. And because they could also eat each other's love (but of course it was unsatisfying because they consumed their own generative output and emitted almost nothing) they changeling horde would set up towns where everyone stayed in-costume.
 They would have designated changelings pretending to be ponies, and others would file to pretend to be pretending to be ponies and try to infiltrate the town of innocents.
 Dropping your disguise in public would be the equivalent of shouting 'olly olly oxen-free' ; everyone would stop what they were doing to hear the words of the one with a problem, consider their response as a town, then kick them out of town to maintain a sense of propriety and mystery.

 Of course, occasionally a real pony would try to hide there, thinking it was mostly real ponies, or at least half of them which was why the changelings would stay in disguise. But one wrong trip to the marketplace in the evening, and there would be no more pony.
 Except this day, when our subject would sneak into what he thought for sure to be the real pony of the town, and ask how they had stayed hidden ... and after some embarrassed stalling the lone changeling, in their own home, would drop their disguise, or swap it to look like the real pony, and explain how this place worked.
 Then go on the adventure of trying to sneak out the pony whose natural love could be detected through walls from fifty feet away.
 And the changeling army marching through, no disguise of course, having heard stories of roaming food herds in the area.

That could be both needlessly convoluted or genius. There is a lot of potential there, say, ponies from the pony resistance infuriating or trying to travel through a town and have a physiological horror drama where you never quite know whom you can trust. They may have their own code words and crap, but it wouldn't matter at some point (I suppose that point even the Thing comes partly to mind). Did you have any characters or other AU elements in mind aside from the lose concept?

Plenty of opportunity for both Stockholm syndrome and Reverse Stockholm syndrome (or is it Lima syndrome now?).

I know this, lately my pony desires have centered on mystery. I want to make small mystery style stories but my craving is for larger ones. It's less defined that a specific AU idea but more of a desire of tone; some mix of haunting and /comfy/. It can be murder or whatever else.  Now, less pony related, I have been tinkering with the idea of a horror game where your being hunted by creepy divergent humans, with the plot twist being that the majority of humanity went on a very strange transhuman path and what is creepy and divergent to the humans of this setting is normal(ish) humans from a lost colony who were none too pleased  at new mainstream humanity's attempt at contacting and reincorporating them into galactic society. I only mention that as that is an almost an inverse of the Daybreakers plot.

Though admittedly it's kind of the inverse of that, with a seasoned resident of the town having ran into a pony very much not playing by the rules from expertise and their own mission.

Though not quite to the letter of the concept here. I don't know how well my writing is as I haven't written in awhile and this was written just as much as a distraction for myself. Certainly expect some spelling errors at least!

At least that is what sticks out to me on a somewhat less sleep deprived reread. I may or may not do another or mess around more, we shall see. It felt nice to write something again and did help me clear my mind a bit and it's fun to explore scenarios. As for my thought here of what I was going for, perhaps an examation of complicated relationships formed from such a pony smuggling enterprise, with some ponies actively working with this exploitive gambit to preserve their species Stockholm syndrome and reverse Stockholm syndrome! Though  if I do continue such a thing could go anyone or played more straight.

Did I know her well? No, but I do recognize some of her pictures. There have been plenty of notable deaths in the fandom and only cover this little snapshot because I simply caught it while sporadically checking on G6 reactions. May she rest in peace.

As an aside, I view something like this as less of a dutiful archive everything and more of a brief snapshot in a moment in time. I'd like to do stuff like this more often, as I consider little snapsnots might be an invariable in the event that an archive or two goes down. Just a little snapshot of what was.

I debate if this little subculture will survive in some form. I used to lean towards no, back in the early 2010s, but... you have enough people who have been shaped by it, there still is some fresh blood coming in in some parts (not just the new social media zoomer places that debate if they belong to the fandom or not). Time will tell...

The problem is those who have porn brain pollute things to freakish fetish territory. Kind of the way fetishes work. Anons who have more tastefull and moderate taste don't have good tags. You can find some attempts "reasonably sized X," but still their needs to be tagging work.

I am not 100% familiar with the cultural norms here, but while they cluster to single threads I don't think they would delete this, at least right away, while your still asking a question.

Even if alone, it isn't completely undoable. Personal booru software and a some elbow grease you could amass a good collection of reasonable pony images. Keep a list and mass tag the shit when you get a good idea of what to look for.

Except I'd argue that isn't futa female but rule69, Bubble Berry; solo_male, which should also imply solo.

Horse penis is significant in size IRL. However, the proportions are off. It's unrealistically thick in terms of trying to be anatomically correct. Also that erect penis reaches to/past the forelegs. To be correct, it should reach around halfway to the forelegs. Reposting that pic here.

Tags are available for everyone to make. The reason it hasn't been done is because nobody wants to do it, that simple. Maybe make a tag for a few images you really like and people might adopt it. Just don't expect it to be instant, if you have ever drawn yourself you'd know how annoying the process of tagging across multiple websites can be so it probably wont start actively tagged
