I want to touch on something Ukraine war related. I posted it elsewhere but the thread was Mülleimered.
It's about the peace talks in 2022, everyone only remembers Istanbul.
But there was an earlier event, just days after Russia attacked Ukraine. Kiev was ready to achieve at least a ceasefire, they organized peace conference in Bern, but the EU quickly give $500 million to Ukraine and promised another €4,5 billion if they continued the fight.
They described the situation as "watershed moment" - they had to act quickly. One could say because Ukraine urgently needed weapons, but it sounds like because Ukraine wanted to quit, and they did not want that to happen.
But situation did not improve which led to Istanbul. Which was torpedoed by BoJo and co.
Article from 2022 February 25:
https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-ready-to-negotiate-with-russia/
> Earlier on Feb. 25, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov said that Ukraine offered to hold the negotiations in Warsaw, instead of Minsk, which was proposed by Russia. Then, according to Peskov, Ukraine stopped the conversation.
> Nykyforov denied it and said that Ukraine was willing to negotiate, and the talks continue.
> Zelensky said that everything would depend on the security guarantees that Ukraine can receive.
On 2022 February 26:

> In Bern, diplomatic efforts are in full swing to organise a peace conference to end the war in Ukraine. The immediate goal would be to achieve a ceasefire. A request to this effect was made on Saturday by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky to Swiss President Ignazio Cassis. This request authorises Switzerland to formally and under international law...
Sadly the article is paywalled.
But then on 2022 February 27
https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-ukraine-russia-funding-weapons-budget-military-aid/
> he EU had agreed “to provide arms — lethal arms, lethal assistance — to the Ukrainian army for a value of [a] €450 million support package and €50 million more for the non-lethal supplies – [such as] fuel and protective equipment.”
> the EU will use an off-budget so-called “European Peace Facility” financing instrument with a ceiling of €5 billion that can be used to provide military aid.
> “Another taboo has fallen,” Borrell said. “The taboo that the EU was not providing arms in a war, yes we are doing it … This war requires our engagement in order to support the Ukrainian army.”
The money wasn't spent on purchases, and wasn't given to Ukraine. It was used to reimburse those EU member states who sent weapons and equipment (I think this was the time when Germany said, they will just send helmets).
Basically the "security guarantee" Zelensky received was the EU war fund. He did not lie everything really depended on that.
