What Chevron Deference is, and why SCOTUS ended it

For those who don't understand what Chevron Deference is, and why SCOTUS ended it, here's the long and short of it:

A family fishing company, Loper Bright Enterprises, was being driven out of business, because they couldn't afford the $700 per day they were being charged by the National Marine Fisheries Service to monitor their company.
The thing is, federal law doesn't authorize NMFS to charge businesses for this. They just decided to start doing it in 2013.
Why did they think they could away with just charging people without any legal authorization?
Because in 1984, in the Chevron decision, the Supreme Court decided that regulatory agencies were the "experts" in their field, and the courts should just defer to their "interpretation" of the law.
So for the past 40 years, federal agencies have been able to "interpret" laws to mean whatever they want, and the courts had to just go with it.
It was called Chevron Deference, and it put bureaucrats in charge of the country.
It's how the OHSA was able to decide that everyone who worked for a large company had to get the jab, or be fired.
No law gave them that authority, they just made it up.
It's how the ATF was able to decide a piece of plastic was a "machine gun".
It's how the NCRS was able to decide that a small puddle was a "protected wetlands".
It's how out-of-control agencies have been able to create rules out of thin air, and force you to comply, and the courts had to simply defer to them, because they were the "experts".
Imagine if your local police could just arrest you, for any reason, and no judge or jury was allowed to determine if you'd actually committed a crime or not. Just off to jail you go.
That's what Chevron Deference was.
It was not only blatantly unconstitutional, it caused immeasurable harm to everyone.
Thankfully, it's now gone.
We haven't even begun to feel the effects of this decision in the courts. It will be used, for years to come, to roll back federal agencies, and we'll all be better of for it.
And that's why politicians and corporate media are freaking out about it

It curbs the judicial power afforded to courts, and simultaneously expands agencies’ executive power beyond constitutional limits.

All entrances to the city of Manawa, about55miles (88 kilometers) west of Green Bay, also have been blocked, the city said in a post on its Facebook page.

“Please do not try to drive into the city or around the city,” the post read. “Vehicles are being flooded on the roads around the city. Union Street is flooded. N. Bridge Street is flooded. Beech Street is washed away. Howard Street is flooded. Industrial Drive is flooded.”

“Because of the amount of rain we are receiving … there will be flooding in the streets and yards,” the post continued. “It is everywhere in the city.”

The weather service warns that the rain, and possibly thunderstorms, could occur through the weekend and into early next week.

Boeing to plead guilty to avoid trial over fatal 737 Max crashes

Boeing has agreed to plead guilty to fraud to avoid going on trial in the United States on charges stemming from two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max.

Under the plea deal, Boeing would pay a fine of $243.6m and be required to invest at least $455m in its compliance and safety programmes, the US Department of Justice said in a court filing on Sunday.
The aircraft giant would also agree to be subject to a third-party monitor’s assessment of its safety and quality procedures for three years.

“We can confirm that we have reached an agreement in principle on terms of a resolution with the Justice Department, subject to the memorialisation and approval of specific terms,” Boeing said in a statement.

The plea agreement announced on Sunday only relates to Boeing’s culpability in relation to the 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, not other incidents that have raised questions about the company’s safety standards, including the mid-flight blowout of Alaska Airlines flight 1282 in January.

The deal, which requires the approval of a federal judge, also only covers the corporation of Boeing, not any current or former employees.
As a convicted felon, Boeing could be excluded from lucrative government contracts with the US Department of Defense and NASA, although it could seek waivers to continue doing business with the agencies.

In 2003, the US Air Force waived a decision to suspend several Boeing units from bidding on contracts following “serious and substantial violations of federal law” to award the aircraft giant a $56m satellite project.

Marcos Plan to Invade
The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs held a hearing to gather testimony about plans by Filipino radical and former dictator Ferdinand Marcos to invade the Republic of the Philippines. Marcos' former attorney, Richard Hirschfeld, provided information to the Subcommittee after having secretly taped several of their conversations. In an attempt to preclude Hirschfeld’s testimony, Marcos (via letter) invoked the attorney-client privilege. Members also heard from Robert Chastain, a confidante of Mohammed al Fassi (a Marcos ally) and business partner to Mr. Hirschfeld.
Per requests by the Justice Department, the committee recessed to an Executive Session to discuss sensitive matters.

In August 2022, the Libreral government appointed Catherine Stewart as Canada’s “Ambassador For Climate Change”. In the words of Justin Trudeau at the time of her appointment, Stewart would

“drive Canada’s continued collaboration with the international community to build a clean, healthy future for everyone – here in Canada and beyond”

And drive collaboration she did – to the tune of over a quarter million dollars worth of luxury hotel stays, and business class airfare. In one notable instance, Stewart billed the taxpayers of this country over $10,000 for a three day jaunt from Toronto to Ottawa including airfare and $323 a night room at the Sheraton Centre Hotel to attend a climate conference “to promote Canada’s clean growth.”
