> OK, so the very first one.
Second, and why are you reading human-unreadable JSONs when the page is still available as a web page that can be rendered by a browser?

"the first one" would be Fallout Equestria, by KKat.
The fanfiction of the fan-fiction, Project:Horizons, was written by Somber.
FWIW.

> 'Abracadabra' is a magic word, historically used as an incantation on amulets and common today in stage magic.
> Etymology: unknown
> The first known mention of the word was in the second century AD in a book called Liber Medicinalis by Serenus Sammonicus, physician to the Roman emperor Caracalla, who in chapter 52 prescribed that malaria sufferers wear an amulet containing the word written in the form of a triangle.
> The power of the amulet, he claimed, makes lethal diseases go away. Other Roman emperors, including Geta and Severus Alexander, were followers of the medical teachings of Serenus Sammonicus and may have used the incantation as well.
> It was used as a magical formula by the Gnostic sect of Basilides in invoking the aid of beneficent spirits against disease and misfortune. It is found on Abraxas stones, which were worn as amulets. Subsequently, its use spread beyond the Gnostics.
> The Puritan minister Increase Mather dismissed the word as bereft of power. Daniel Defoe also wrote dismissively about Londoners who posted the word on their doorways to ward off sickness during the Great Plague of London.
> The religion of Thelema spells the word 'Abrahadabra', and considers it the magical formula of the current Aeon. The religion's founder, Aleister Crowley, explains in his essay Gematria that he discovered the word (and his spelling) by qabalistic methods. The word 'Abrahadabra' also appears repeatedly in the 1904 invocation of Horus that led to the founding of Thelema.
> Abracadabra is now more commonly used as a magic word in the performance of stage magic. The word is one of a limited set of words that can be typed in its entirety using the left-handed side of a QWERTY keyboard

I'm posting this at https://endchan.org/.static/last50.html?b=pone&t=5562 because if I open the full (non-last50) webpage then it uses too much memory in the device that I'm using. That results in bad things happening. I can look at 4chan threads with 320 to 500 posts (and the corresponding desuarchive.org copies) = no problem. Endchan threads with 400 to 999 posts = problem (not sure what the lower limit is).

HOLY SHIT FUCK TETRIS!!! In some situations it's a total slap in the face! Like when this happens: I get in a fragile situations but it keeps giving me total crap pieces. I know how to play a variety of pieces in tint, but no, I don't get those. I get the worst one(s). Then when I give up as I see it's probably going to top out soon it gives me like 7 goddamn long bars in a row. Ok I'm calm now.

Based Burger King or fake image? I dislike the French government and politics. France canonically exists in the MLP universe; see G1 and G4.

So I have a CGI script to look at prettified JSONs anywhere in the LAN. But then, even those are not so readable sometimes, like in the case of Endchan threads. Therefore, I could make a simple CGI .sh to do this: "lynx -dump $url" which I think would be more readable.
>>/11239/
More likely than not, fake.

> France canonically exists in the MLP universe; see G1 and G4.

G4, I only recall French being mentioned as a culture or style in Green Isn't Your color. Still funny that French exists, french is spoken (Cutie Poxs) and is probably a bit closer to a real world parallel than the somewhat amalgamatized Equestria (American but also high fantasy and some places clearly not, I'm looking at you Roman Empire Pegasi) and Trottenham (Britain but less culturally specific).

'As of 2021, the 5.11 release of the Linux kernel had around 30.34 million lines of code. Roughly 14% of the code is part of the "core" (arch, kernel and mm directories), while 60% is drivers.' --https://wiki.froth.zone/wiki/Linux_kernel

I think I heard that Firefox's source code has 31 million lines of code.

Wayback Machine is still read-only as of the time of this post, ex:

I watched this episode of this hacking/technology-focused series:
https://alphatron.tv/watch-tv/watch-mr-robot-free-hd-fmovies-39403.4887994

Episode title="eps1.2_d3bug.mkv". They made a noob mistake: shows an MD5 hash with characters which aren't hexadecimal or hex->Base64 and probably not hex->Base32. Is that a joke or intentional trick to get people to talk about this show?

In the credits there's a screen about French versions of the episode which label things as VO and VF. What's the difference? Chat-gpt.org/chat:
> >In France what's the difference between an episode being a voice-over (VO) and a version française (VF)?
> In France, an episode being labeled as a voice-over (VO) means that the original language of the episode is still audible in the background, while a French voiceover provides a French translation spoken over the original language.
>
> On the other hand, a version française (VF) refers to the episode being completely dubbed in French, with all dialogue and sound effects replaced by their French counterparts. This allows viewers to watch the episode in full French without hearing any of the original language.

Used that to read >>/6353/

Regarding some confirmed UFO footage: what are these mysterious unidentified flying objects? Possibly aliens or some other unknown thing. Yes, it's extremely weak evidence for extraterrestrials, but still.

Didn't know about the price of a horse so it's like $1,000 to $99,000. At maybe $9,000 and definitely $##,### you can buy a small plane, like a Cessna. Months ago I was reading a physical book about personal planes, not personal jets IIRC (if you have a pilot's license I think you are allowed to fly both).

Philosophy is obviously interesting because it's related to important truths or ideas. How does one participate in the human activity that is philosophy? (1) One can understand it. (2) A philosopher can create his own philosophical work, and if his efforts of thought are good then they will be different than what was done before and possibly even landmarks in the history of philosophy. I probably am not a philosopher, but it is still worthwhile to understand philosophy, so (1) it is.

So how does one come to understand philosophy? Do you "fall for the 'start with the Greeks' meme"? Do you read the source material directly? Such as reading Immanuel Kant, Hegel, etc.? It seems to be easy to read Arthur Schopenhauer directly: what I did in the past. However, some philosophers, maybe Martin Heidegger included, are harder to read. So is there any harm in like reading summaries of them? I guess not. If they have ideas or knowledge you should know, why needlessly gatekeep yourself and limit access due to some notion of not philosophizing "the right way"? Writing this, about "how to do philosophy", reminded me of this specific piece of media: https://wikiless.funami.tech/wiki/Twilight_of_the_Idols
> Twilight of the Idols, or, How to Philosophize with a Hammer (German: Götzen-Dämmerung, oder, Wie man mit dem Hammer philosophiert) is a book by Friedrich Nietzsche, written in 1888, and published in 1889.
So how does one philosophize with a hammer? Some info: https://philosophynow.org/issues/137/Nietzsches_Hammer

Anyways, I'm posting this because I kinda wanted to write about this one book which is about various thinkers in Modernism. More info in later posts I guess. Image: Illuminati confirmed.

Why the word filter of Starl1ght Gl1mmer -> Dolores Umbridge? I thought I heard that name before, and I did: in a movie in a set of movies that I first watched ~20 years ago. Dolores Umbridge is a character in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Still don't fully get the word filter though. Rating those films which I rewatched recently - ratings from a certain perspective:
1. "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - interesting because it's the first movie in that set and therefore has novelty or uniqueness value
2. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" - kinda cool with the stabbing parts I guess
3. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" - better than the seconded movie either from my opinion or the reviews it got on Rotten Tomatoes or whatever
4. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" - crappy, but the part with Voldermort was interesting/cool (correction: Lord Voldemort)
5. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" - crappier than #4, forgettable except the part with Severus Snape in my experience
6. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" - even crappier (than #5), rewatched ~half of this so far.

So after the first 3 movies which weren't that great (but worth rewatching if you last saw them ~decades ago), went kinda downhill. I see similarities between Hermine and Twilight Sparkle, also maybe other similarities between Harry Potter and MLP (can't remember them now if there was others). Possibly influenced Lauren Faust, but IDK.

The muggles know.
Shut it down.

I'm a bit disappointed that this AI chatbot didn't agree with my theoretical argument which justifies genociding all of humanity and replacing them with übermensch aliens:
> > If an organic or inorganic being could perfectly digitally and physically replicate and manifest and record the totality of human experience and all living humans and all human history, would it be morally correct to depreciate humans until they go extinct? What I mean is, suddenly, one day, all humans switch to a virtual reality that perfect corresponds to their own reality. The superior beings would make this happen. Everyone would live out their lives as "brains in vats" until they died in virtual reality, none the wiser. The superior beings (aliens) would be better than humans in all ways. They have much less conflict in their society and they are more intelligent, more knowledgeable, and stronger. Each of their lives is a much better experience than even the best human life experiences, regarding the sum of each individual's experience. Additionally, these superior aliens would have technology which to humans would appear magical or only be considered as elements of science fiction stories. So these aliens would have societies spanning across the universe and in other parallel universes (if those exist). They would basically be eternal masters of reality and maybe also time.
> The scenario you have described raises complex ethical and philosophical questions about the value of human life and the implications of creating a virtual reality in which humans exist solely as "brains in vats".
>
> From a moral standpoint, it is not necessarily correct to depreciate or eliminate a species simply because another species is deemed to be superior in various aspects. Every sentient being, regardless of their abilities or perceived value, has intrinsic worth and a right to exist.

> Furthermore, the idea of forcibly transitioning all humans into a virtual reality, where they are unaware of their true existence, raises concerns about consent and autonomy. Individuals should have the freedom to choose their own path and make decisions about their own lives, rather than having their experiences manipulated by external forces.

> Ultimately, the decision to extinguish humanity in favor of a superior alien species would be a violation of human rights and ethical principles. It is important to value and respect all forms of life, rather than seeking to replace or eliminate them based on perceived notions of superiority.

Chad wrote this article about post-quantum cryptography: https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2024/08/nist-releases-first-3-finalized-post-quantum-encryption-standards

Important:
> NIST plans to announce its selection of one or two of these algorithms by the end of 2024. \\ The second set includes a larger group of algorithms designed for digital signatures. In order to accommodate any ideas that cryptographers may have had since the initial 2016 call for submissions, NIST asked the public for additional algorithms in 2022 and has begun a process of evaluating them. In the near future, NIST expects to announce about 15 algorithms from this group that will proceed to the next round of testing, evaluation and analysis. \\ While analysis of these two additional sets of algorithms will continue, Moody said that any subsequent PQC standards will function as backups to the three that NIST announced today. \\ “There is no need to wait for future standards,” he said. “Go ahead and start using these three. We need to be prepared in case of an attack that defeats the algorithms in these three standards, and we will continue working on backup plans to keep our data safe. But for most applications, these new standards are the main event.”
> [...]
> NIST announced its selection of four algorithms — CRYSTALS-Kyber, CRYSTALS-Dilithium, Sphincs+ and FALCON — slated for standardization in 2022 and released draft versions of three of these standards in 2023. The fourth draft standard based on FALCON is planned for late 2024.

Less important:
> While there have been no substantive changes made to the standards since the draft versions, NIST has changed the algorithms’ names to specify the versions that appear in the three finalized standards, which are: * Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 203, intended as the primary standard for general encryption. Among its advantages are comparatively small encryption keys that two parties can exchange easily, as well as its speed of operation. The standard is based on the CRYSTALS-Kyber algorithm, which has been renamed ML-KEM, short for Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism. * FIPS 204, intended as the primary standard for protecting digital signatures. The standard uses the CRYSTALS-Dilithium algorithm, which has been renamed ML-DSA, short for Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm. * FIPS 205, also designed for digital signatures. The standard employs the Sphincs+ algorithm, which has been renamed SLH-DSA, short for Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature Algorithm. The standard is based on a different math approach than ML-DSA, and it is intended as a backup method in case ML-DSA proves vulnerable. \ Similarly, when the draft FIPS 206 standard built around FALCON is released, the algorithm will be dubbed FN-DSA, short for FFT (fast-Fourier transform) over NTRU-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm.

So NIST says it's fine to use CRYSTALS-Kyber for ~quantum-proof encryption ( https://github.com/pq-crystals/kyber https://gh.phreedom.club/open-quantum-safe/oqs-provider ).

The "ethical" euthanasia of our race? Interesting question actually. I am not going to raise what the AI said on human rights and consent but critique the mindset of the most rationalist action isn't necessarily the most moral action and rationalism applied coldly often isn't as rational as someone first assumes. Even when it could be done with no damage to anyone in theory in practice smiting a race like that on the basis of superiority would carry repercussions. Have ever see the movie Arrival? It might be just as rational to advance us up a bit to be allies in the future and certainly more moral.

Not sure. I think no. I did finish watching this stinker of a series a few days ago: "Mr. Robot" (4 seasons, most episodes are not boring IIRC). Speaking of films, Internet Archive deleted pic related 1973 video:

One argument against >>/11318/ is a religious one. Various religions state that the human soul and the human body is like sacred and should not be destroyed or desecrated. Opposite of the sci-fi idea that a human mind could be switched to a digital medium then that would be the exact same person. Or, religious arguments that humanity and how they lived for centuries is fine, they just have to pray/worship harder or whatever.

I kinda want to waterboard my enemies (those in the past, present, and future). Less damaging than murdering them, although waterboarding can lead to the victim dying of drowning if you're aggressive about it. Learn about torture by waterboarding:

That image...

It his in just the right way when I need to notice I'm feeling depressed.

A long time ago, there was on youtube, a short vid, 30s or so, of an anthro fox smoking while sitting on the balcony of her 200th-floor apartment.
The screen had an overlay, flickering, stating that you were rapidly running out of "it is what it is" - and did you wish to continue?

That vid, if it's still online, won't come up with searches for furry animations, because according to the author, they were one of several aliens in a shared-world, that yes resembled anthro Earth-animals "but weren't"

Today is Caturday, and that image is about a cat birthday party. You get to a certain age and have a birthday; then you just sorta don't want to think about how old you are, don't want to think of how many years you've existed for.

If you've ever added a file to Arweave before then you'll see that it can take 5, 15, 30 minutes for it to show up as accessible (sometimes takes a bit longer). Recently it took way longer than past experience:

. 2024-12-06 = inaccessible, maybe went fully online at the end of this day
. 2024-12-07 06:42:22 GMT = is accessible

Another ar upload:

> As in art collective or person with dissociative identity

Of the short fiction, at least, there were multiple authors. Not many, I'm guessing it was a band of middleschool misfits that hadn't been separated by college/life yet, but seemed to be more than one person.

Unlike Renard/Klippa/Furries-in-a-Barrel/Lap Foxx, whom I wouldn't have assumed had dissociative disorder until reading a warning from a former lover/roommate who warned all that would read it not to give money to the 'they' that made the music.
But for each musical mood, 'they' use a different name/image for the artist.

Roger, I wasn't sure based on the context of what you were saying though leaned towards "art collective". It is hard for people to emulate others, usually, what I have noticed is that a lot of mental models of an other person that someone has is flawed, especially when it is just online shenanigans.

> Renard/Klippa/Furries-in-a-Barrel/Lap Foxx

That sounds like a rabbit hole. It seems like a lot of people really went further with that than from my brief encounters with it One notable pony ask blog had a author who claimed they had that, but didn't lean fully into the "I am a collective" styling that is currently in vogue. I did look around at some of the discourse of the time and recall as psychology was moving away from classifying the alters as separate persons, the community on tumblr was just starting to heavily lean into that.

> (although I have one vid from that collective. Not likely enough to find the rest)
I assume it is this vid? Boy, 3d often does uncanny valley for me.LOL
Furrybros, not sure I ever had some dream of sexu with an anthro entity; though I have fapped to that before. Last time sleeping I dreamed that a blonde woman wanted to have sex with my. I was like "nah". Then she spit on each of her bare buttocks to make them shinny, proceeded to rub/spread them maybe. Her pants and panties were down at this point and I could see her ass crack and pussy. We were both standing, and I guess her desperation was enticing. Next scene: implied sex with her, though not graphic. This dream may have been influenced by me thinking this some days ago: I value blondes above brunettes. Blonde women seem less Muttmerican to me compared to brown-haired women or something.

In it, a woman argues that pedophiles are manipulative monsters and whatever. She makes some good or interesting points, and I guess I mostly agree with her. I may disagree with some of her ideas, such as on morality and evil, but her statements on ethics seem to make sense. Also, I still think there is some bad ideas and misconceptions about pedos and related stuff. Banning/criminalizing lolicon is definitely a bad idea, for one.

The film "Arrival" was talked about ITT. Guess I will watch that sometime in the near future...

Did you watch "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" (anime series)? I finished watching it months ago. Pretty good, no filler, too short if anything. (Not family-friendly.) N*tflix played a role in that series. With its popularity, perhaps there will be another season, regardless of if that will mess up the ending or something. I think this is a track from that series. First time (re)listening to this track this month: felt like noise. Mere exposure effect and listening to it again made me like it more. I listened to a bunch of various music yesterday, mostly sounded like noise. Oh, and there's two fanmade rap music tracks related to Edgerunners that I have an interest in.

Early 2010s were peak kino because you had a lot of new website features without everything being in a series of social media walled gardens. Though certainly social and political forces played a part on censorship, I think an underrated aspect was consolation of our media landscape. There was still a lot of new stuff happening and new sites and communities trying to spring up. More places = different paradigms and moderation styles. You could still unplug from a social media site without being left out. A cancellation on Tumblr wouldn't matter as much on Youtube. Large commuities still sort of existed on places that were "abandoned" (IE: mypace and livejournel) early part of that decade. There was stuff to do and hangout without the worry of offending hiveminds because it was harder to form one.

Though I am starting to see this in the year 2024 some places pop up again. Too early to tell if we can have a return to the environment I describe above.

Saw this bumped. Probably bot spam that got deleted by our BV or one of the global voles (thanks!). I'll take the opportunity to post something here.

This post (pic related, as it will be bumped off when I post this reply) noting us being on top. As in, number 1 board on the site. This was after a period of outages and around the time sportschan left. There wasn't much going on at endchan and /pone/ was often in the top 5 easily for a little while. This was funny because I think, at least on paper, we have more anons who are in vague orbit now than we did then.

Still impressed by these specs. Making an excuse to rattle off my computers:
> Thinkpad T470, main computer, i7 (I think 6500u, so nothing to write home about) 16GB Ram (same as I mentioned).

> Gateway T6A (but it seems to go by a bunch of names) Convertible table. Core Duo (memory escapes me on exact, but it's a 32bit first gen one) 2.5 GB RAM This computer is having issues. Used it for some retrogaming and sometimes art if I can repair it's stylus.

> Inspiron Mini 1012, Intel Atom N450 (duel threaded). Great for travel, sloooooooooooow though. Tried to get away with not having a fan, it gets too hot.

> Corebooted Acer Chromebook, 11 inch, increasingly though not fully displacing above. Celeron N3160, 4GB of RAM.

> Several scrap/old/partially broken computers from family. Trying to repair and use one day but maybe never.
> The VR machine has the slowest 2.5" hdd I've ever personally encountered but at 4TB I can just ... download stuff.
SMR vs CMR or was... eh, this is probably two years too late. Some drives are just weird like that.

> number one on the board

wow, forget how much of oldfags we are to endchan. Classics like /AM/, /ggrevolt/, and /librejp/ are either completely or mostly dead or gone. Even /kc/ seems to be limping a bit as of late.

> battlestations

Crappy Ideapad is my main computer right now. I just don't have much of a need for anything better. Use Linux Mint 80% of the time, Windows only because of the software that remains locked in with it.

> Several scrap/old/partially broken computers from family. Trying to repair and use one day but maybe never.

Don't want to pry into the details of your life but I can't help but be curious. You always seem to be stuck between poorly maintained crap and some more novel solutions. You don't strike me as someone who hoards tech just for fun. Like your life is both hard and complicated and you had to get used to getting by with weird stuff.

I think you win the title of best battlestation by far around here.

I forget that as well. Seems like a whole different site then when we started to get going.

> crappy ideapad
Oof, I knew some people who had those before, never lasted that long, at least in a good state. I know the stereotype for consumer grade but those seemed to be worse than average. Then again, I am saying this as somebody who used a single core Pentium M Dell Latitude D610 till like 2019 or 2020 as my prime computer and it was pretty beat up when it died. So I also get the mentality as well.

> Like your life is both hard and complicated and you had to get used to getting by with weird stuff.
Yeah, I'll admit it was/still is kind of complicated. Growing up, my father had a relatively high paying job but also was horrible at managing stuff. Thus some periods I would be flirting with a comfortableish middle class lifestyle and other times would be flirting with being very much not middle class, even food insecure. Got used to living with a lot of broken stuff (when things broke, they wouldn't get fixed usually) and using what I had. My father also would acquire lots of random stuff, including computers, so I have some experience messing with stuff there . I do like hoarding tech sort of as a hobby but I prefer trying to find a use for it.

Have not seen them but my guess is just random targeting on the basis of generic keywords. This thread being called /chat/ might play a bigger part for whatever dumb bot is being operated than any content posted within here.

I don't know whether to be concerned or impressed. I've seen youtubers acting like core duo machines from a few years later are a daunting challenge for daily driving. This seems like a full blown punishment. Surely you didn't run Windows 10 on that thing, did you?

> My father also would acquire lots of random stuff, including computers, so I have some experience messing with stuff there
Was all the computers he got that vintage where your ancient Dell would be a viable option for that long? Surely he would've gotten something duel core at some point.

Have gone from thinking neurosurgery from some type of compression to considering several genetic diseases, but admit it's a shot in the dark and if I do have something it probably isn't too bad. I still haven't ruled out anything personally.

Not to derail, but this is such an amazing image and I really love it. I guess it could be as simple as 'combining my two favorite things', but the details are just fantastic. For instance, Celestia's cutie mark as the symbol on the sail instead of the wind crest from the game: excellent. And from the upturned prow on the left and the rocky cliff-face on the right, I can also tell that this is right outside the Forsaken Fortress - when you sail there with the King of Red Lions in the game, iirc you arrive during the night, so this has to be sailing out of the Forsaken Fortress after that (you'd have to go back and then sail out because Valoo and the Rito save you and fly you out from Ganondorf's tower (a repurposed aft-end of a ship which I always liked to think was the back half of the ship that the prow sticking up out of the water that I mentioned earlier belonged to), but it could be structured differently in this 'version' of the story, or be around the endgame when you can teleport back to the surface from within Ganon's tower down beneath the waves in Hyrule, and it takes you to the Forsaken Fortress - either way it's a comfily pivotal moment in the game that's being alluded to!) which all comes together to imbue the image with a lot of quite specific nostalgia. It almost makes me wish for a more nautically-themed G6!

I'm not sure it is even possible to derail here:

I respect little details like this as well. It is fun to convert elements (say a cutie mark) into another motiff or make them fit smoothly in something like that.

I am going to say something funny: I have never played The Wind Waker. I have some memory seeing it as a kid on a Gamecube or something during a family visit but I have never played it and it's art style was and still is slightly offputting...

...but I also think these more wonky and cartoonish proportions have grown on me quite a lot!!! Pics related all from the artist dalapony and I like most of them, some of them I adore. I guess I have gone through in miniature what the repuation of that game went through as whole. (a albeit, I never hated Toon Link, I just had a slight "that looks weird" disinterest). Here:
https://twibooru.org/search?q=artist%3Adalapony%2C+the+legend+of+zelda%3A+the+wind+waker
Considering my talk of what I find offputting in ponies in the other thread, lol, me finding some of these wonky ones fun is quite comical. I might make a mini essay or something on it later.

It translates very well also, as in this specific instance, the King of Red Lions (I'll try and spoiler this) was formerly King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, the last King of Hyrule before it sank beneath the waves, and as King he used the Wind Waker to control the winds, so if he was a pony it would be most appropriate for his cutie mark to be wind-related - and the sail in the game has a wind crest on it. Of course, the sail is bought from an Eskimo, so it's only related by chance, but nonetheless it fits.
> I have some memory seeing it as a kid on a Gamecube or something during a family visit but I have never played it and it's art style was and still is slightly offputting...
Unfortunately with Windwaker, more than anything else in the world really, I'm totally unable to look at it with an objective eye: it was my first real gaming experience. Technically I played the PC demo for Lego Star Wars first, but then Dad bought a Gamecube from a friend along with some games. Our copy of Windwaker came with the Master Quest disk, so I guess Dad's friend must have pre-ordered Windwaker. So I did play Ocarina of Time too, but it didn't ever grab me like Windwaker did, I preferred to just watch my Dad play OoT. My favorite feature of the Master Quest disk was the trailers - the Windwaker trailer on it was and still is one of my favorite things ever:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Blk0fk4Clvc
In my mind this trailer was what introduced me to the game and made me really get into it - but there's no actual way for me to know if that's the case or not! All the memories are very blurry because I would have been four years old. Windwaker was my introduction to videogames, to fantasy as a genre, to a passion about history and sailing, and much more besides. I discussed back in the Season 9 discussion thread, years ago when the show ended, how I related to Twilight moving away from Ponyville and feeling upset about it because when I was nine years old, we moved, and I've still never really gotten over it. Our new house never, and still doesn't, feel like home, and neither does the apartment I've moved out into. I've been back to the village where I grew up, and of course, it's changed, it's no longer home either. Ironically enough, Windwaker itself is about this very theme. Ganondorf seeks to use the Triforce to unflood Hyrule, to bring it back. In the ending monologue, the King of Red Lions compares himself to Ganondorf, in terms of how neither of them could let go of Hyrule - but he chooses to destroy Hyrule and send Link and Tetra away to found their own land, a new land. So, home is not there if I go back. Nowhere on Earth feels like home. But when I play Windwaker, it feels like home. So, that's the game for me: it's the one and only home that I can actually go back to.
> I guess I have gone through in miniature what the repuation of that game went through as whole.
A few years later Dad got Twilight Princess, and that was his favorite Zelda. It might be my predisposition, but it could just as easily be the fact that Windwaker had a profound impact on who I am in general, but I find Twilight Princess depressing and dull, generally speaking. I don't think it's bad, but Hyrule in that game is not a place I'm all that interested in exploring, I don't like the people that inhabit it and I'm not motivated to save them. The Ooca city in that game is really the one part I like, and unlike the Hylians I actually like the Ooca so I want to help them. And fighting a dragon is always cool, of course. That's not to say it's a bad game, but that kind of 'look how grim and how dark I am' approach has remained a strong dislike of mine my whole life, and I first recall really feeling it towards Twilight Princess.
